Harding parties, Civil War doesn’t
Now it's time once again
for "Reader Mail." Print
ed in this column today
are actual letters from actual
readers Actually. I make them
up myself because all you peo
ple who read me religiously still
refuse to write in oven a single
stupid letter, and I'm pretty
steamed at the both of you.
Dear Da\e.
How come every year, it
seems the Civil War basketball
games become less and less
important, low attendance, less
hype and a basically boring
atmosphere now surround the
once stellar battl®
What's up with that’
— Pig Champion
Eugene
We/I Hig. Saturday will hr the
299th showdown between Ore
gon and Oregon State on the
basketball court You're right,
the game has lost a lot of its
attraction during the past few
years
The mam reason is because
the Beavers have been getting
progressively worse since Ralph
Miller left a few years ago The
Ducks have been bad for the
past 20 years, so it used to he a
hig game for Oregon kind of the
same way the football game is
for Oregon State
Now, however, beating the
Heavers is not that big of a task
for the Ducks, so a lot of the
excitement of playing Oregon
State is lost
That does not explain what
the hell the deal is with the foot
ball game Year after year, the
game draws a huge crowd Yet,
DaveCharbonneai
this year the game was between
two teams nearly as crappy as
the basketball teams, and the
masses still came out to see the
Beavers humiliate the Ducks in
30-degree weather
I really think the main prob
lem. with our school at least, is
that people could give a damn
about basketball because they
have yet to exfierience McArthur
Court when Oregon is winning
consistently The students who
were here during the days of
Terrell Brandon. Bichard Lucas
and Kevin Mixon are mostly
graduated, leaving a group of
students who have football
rammed down their throats for
three years while the basketball
team loses 20 games a season.
Game time is 1 p m at The
Pit
Dear Dave.
What's your whole take on
this Nancy Kerrigan fiasco?
What's happening to sports
fans?
— Slim
Florence
This is no laughing matter
How a fan can be so obsessed
with winning and losing that he
actually tries to destroy the
career of a competitor is beyond
me There's really no wisdom I
can offer on this subject except
to say the obvious: It's disgust
ing and a disgrace to sports fans
everywhere
On a lighter note, how about
that Tonya Harding
last year about this time, I
wrote a column about how I
went to junior high with Tonya,
and that although I didn't know
her well. I knew enough to see
that her popularity had gone to
her head in a hig wav
Well. I have a newfound
respect for the Portland native
This summer. I went to the Cat
tle Company Square Cow Fun
Bar three times (pretty cool,
huh?). Anyway, of the three
times I was in that meat market,
w hich is also the sleaziest bar in
town (why do you think I was
there?). 1 saw Tonya there twice.
Call me the gossip guy. but
she was bombed both times. My
friends and l sat there and
watched her and thought. "Well,
she's definitely thrown in the
towel now." She still didn't rec
ognize any of us from junior
high She even dated one of my
friends for a couple of weeks in
eighth grade and had absolutely
no recollection of it.
Harding won the U.S. figure
skating championship this past
weekend and will get one more
crack at an Olympic medal.
To me. Harding is remarkable
Any women who can party like
she did those two nights I saw
her. and then, four months later
win the U.S championship
deserves a lot more than a gold
medal Try a gold-plated stein.
Imagine the party she'll have
if she wins the gold.
