methods that the staff lias developed, said Dr
Robert Weiss, director of the program.
The program started in the late l‘tt>()s. at which
time it likely was the first such program at a
university psychology department. About five
major universities have such programs now, and
most of them have uses! the University's program
as a model. Weiss said.
"This kind of a program has a track record that
shows that things we do are effective." Weiss
said.
One of the program's effective methods of
therapy is its videotaping of the behavior of
couples, and analyzing the way they interact
by using .1 coding system t ailed the "Marital

all over the country, and some people send
videotapes to the University program staff
members tor them to observe the interaction ot
couples, Weiss said
"We can tell what kinds of things couples are
doing that are helpful and unhelpful in o
relationship." he said
If a couple often fights about money, fur
example, the couple is told to try to solve some
issue of their money problems while being
videotaped, Weiss said
Some people don't realize how negatively
they're acting toward their partner until they
watch the videotape, said Kricn de Koning. a
graduate student in psyt hologv
The program staff is especially interested in
