Portland band after Port land band has received the label as 'The Next Big Thing." First, it was Sprinkler Then, it was Pond. Then Hazel And most recently The Spinanes (see other review). The one thing those bands all have in common is that they all ditched Portland fo sign with Seattle's infamous Sub Pop label. But that is not the only thing those reasonably successful Iwnds have in common. They all play pretty wimpy music Not to say that's all bad. but expecting these bands to hit the big time is ridiculous because they simply don't play the type of music that constitutes MTV videos and gold albums. They're all good hands, but are lacking in true musical force. However, now there is a band | from Portland that gives the city some true hope. They are Ever clear. and they are Portland's finest, or at loast the band with the most potential to actually gain some serious exposure for the Portland music scene. The fraud's first brilliant move was to sign with Portland's Tim Kerr Records. Although the rest of the!Kinds from Portland clam ored for the opportunity to sign with Grunge Central. Everclear stayed in Portland with the local company. They released a single. Nervous and Weird, that con tained five songs, including one of the liest songs ever written by a Portland hand ("Elektra Made Me Do It") and a hatch of catchy tunes that were loaded with equal parts distortion and crunch. Only five months later. T/K Records put out Everclear's first full-lenglher. World of Noise. This album contains as much fore* as the KP. but also includes a mellower (not wimpy) side of the band that was not heard on Nervous and Weird. While everyone else in Port land is trying to do something different, the three-piece Ever clear has stu< It to solid, hook heavy songs with meaningful lyrics and memorable music, and it just may pay off for them in the end. World of Noise opens with "Your Genius Hands." a song with drunken, but effective gui tars. with lend singer/guitanst Art Alexakis' signature voice coming through brilliantly. "Hie laughing World" has the trademark guitar distortion, a catchy chorus and is just scream ing for an MTV video. The song "Nervous and Weird" also appears on the disc and is still one of the bands' best songs "Invisible" and "FireMaple Song" are the two songs where Alexakis dominates the sound. On these two songs in particular. Alexakis sings with such con viction. it 's as if you bumped him the wrong way on the street and he's getting in you faco. Alexakis. along with bassist Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert, are what Portland hns been needing for the past couple of years. Hey, there's even a lyric: sheet with the CD! Take advantage of it and appreciate what great a song writer Alexakis is. Humor has it that these boys may lee on the verge of getting signed to a major label (and I don't mean Sub Pop), so catch them now while they're still in the same ranks as Hazel, Pon, and Sprinkler, because soon, they'll lie a notch above. - Dave Charbonneau Oregon Daily Emerald THE BEAVIS AND r~' » Tx« 1 #uvh fen** BUTTHEAD EXPERIENCE ★ ★ GROUP: Vanous LABEL: Geflen If you like Nirvana, you'll love thuir song. If you likt> Aerosmith. you'll enjoy their song. If you like Sir Mix-a-Lot. you'll dig his song. Everything’s covered in The Heavts and Butt head Expert rnce. There’s rap {Sir Mix-a-Lot, Run DMC), metal (Anthrax. Megadeth. Jai kyl, White Zom bie). alternative (Nirvana. Primus. Red Hot Chili Poppers) and even ( her singing with the long-head ed boros. The problem is. most people will end up buying this album for two or three songs, which moans that the only thing that could jus tify buying this CD is to hear the wackiness of Beavis and Butt head. If you think that Imying a Boav is and Butt-head CD will put you on the cutting edge of pop cul ture, you missed the boat about six months ago. Besides, the con versations between the two on the CD aren’t even their best work (their old stuff is way bet ter). So there you go. P.S. This is the last thing 1 review that has anything to do with these two dudes. - Dave Charbonneau Oregon Daily Emerald MANOS GROUP: Spmanes LABEL: Sub Pop he Spinanes' new olbuni Marios is all the rage. i Three, count 'em three, separate reviews in a single issue of Spin, a feature story in the Omgonian and a whole lot of talk around the Northwest has circled the band since the release of its debut album two months ago on Sub Fop. The Spinanes are a two-piece band with Rebecca Gates on vocals and guitars and Scott Flouf on drums. They come from Portland, and are another signee in an attempt by Sub Fop to ‘'break" the Portland scene This band's brand of mellow er pop punk is good music. Gates has an almost dream like voice, and Plouf's drumming Turn to REVIEWS.
