Kaufman to stay at UW
for his senior season
SEATTLE (AIM — The
Washington Huskies will
have Napoleon Kaufman
hack next season
Just 440 yards from U*< orn
ing the all-time rusher in the
Huskies' history, the 5*foot>9
sc ntboi k nnnounc ed Monday
that he has dt-< ided to stay in
Seattle for his senior season
Kaufman. 20. made his
annoum ament at a t ampus
news conference after the
Ni l. Iasi Thursday told him
where he was projec ted to be
pit ked in April's NT!, draft
Kaufman didn't get the
right projection
Kaufman refused Monday
to discuss what he'd learned
from the NFL. But he said. ''1
feel that I'm a first round
pick Obviously. I have a lot
of room to improve, but I feel
I can run yvith the best of
them."
On Monday. Washington
coach Iiiii Lamhright said he
didn't know what the NFL
had said about Kaufman's
prospects
There had been specula
tion that Kaufman could fie
c hosen as late as the third or
fourth round.
As a third-round pit k this
year, the 179-pound Kauf
man probably could have
made about $250,000 ns an
NI’L return specialist, a nick
el wide receiver and a spot
running hack
Kaufman hopes to enhance
his draft status by playing his
final season at Washington.
Hot he knows lie's still going
to be a first-round longshot
because of his size.
"I'm not going to got any
bigger." ho said "I'm no!
going to got (to) 6 foot in a
year and I'm not going to be
200 pounds."
Kaufman’s status was
uncertain after the Huskies
finished their 1993 season
with a victory over Washing
ton State Nov. 20
Kaufman rushed for a
school single-season record
1,299 yards ns a junior, help
ing the Huskies post a 7-4
record in their first of two
years on l’ac-10 probation for
breaking NCAA rules
Because Washington has
been banned from going to a
bowl game for two consecu
tive seasons and because of
Kaufman's outstanding
junior season, he was expect
ed to enter the draft early.
Kaufman went to the Rose
Bowl as a true freshman and
sophomore.
Kaufman's decision to stay
left Lambright optimistic
about the 1994 season. Wash
ington will open next season
against Southern Cal, Ohio
State. Miami and UCLA.
"We |ust got the No. 1
recruit of the season." Lain
bright said It's a lot easier
to coach with a back who
makes your linemen look
good With 2.051 yards in
three seasons, Kaufman is a
sure bet to break the Wash
ington career rushing record
of 3,091 yards set by Joe
Steele from 1970 through
1979.
Kaufman said he planned
to take out an insurance poli
cy, under NCAA rules, in
i ase he gets hurt next season
