Broadway A 957 Willamette I Downtown Mall L' —:<e-J SOUND OFF THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT? ★ ★★ GROUP: Guns n Roses LAKL: Ge^en Guns N' Roses have never been afraid of covering other people's material In the past they have tried their hands on songs by Paul MoCart ney ("Live and Let Die"), Bob Dylan ("Knockin' On Heaven's Door”) and Aerosmith ("Mama Kin”). Now. Axl and the boys have put out a full album of cover songs by bands that supposedly played big roles in influencing CJ N'R into becoming big rock stars. Sounds pretty stupid, huh? As lame ns this concept may sound. Guns N' Roses have actu ally done a respectable job of choosing some cool bands, choosing cool songs by those bands, and then recording them with the powerful crispness Guns \" Roses have become famous for. Guns N' Hoses have usually done justice to the songs and the bands they have covered The band has the musical talent to cover a wide genre of music with out making a mockery of the song. On The Spaghetti Incident?. Guns N' Roses do versions of songs from the late 1950s to the late 1970s punk craze, from cheesy 1970s i lassie rock to ear ly 1970s glam rock, and all the way to the late 1980s Seattle grunge si one The allium covers every musi cal genre that could possibly influence a modern-day rock n roll band, and it covers it well The album begins with The Sky liners "Since 1 Don't Have You." a throw hac k to the doo wop music of the late 1950s. Axl sings the song while surprising ly pulling the reins back on his obnoxious voice, until the last verse. Nonetheless, this song is something you don't h«or bonds do very often which is pay trib ute to where rock really began. The best song on the album has got to be "Down on the Farm." a song originally recorded by the U K Subs. Guns N' Roses unloads their usual musical fort* on the song, but the coolest aspect of the song is the way Axl tries to sound like he has an Eng lish accent. Needless to say. it sounds pretty bad (remember Kevin Costner in Hnhin HncxP), but it adds to the light tone of the album. The band also does a good job of redoing songs like "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth and "Buick Makane" by T Rex (with a lit tle bit of Soundgarden's “Big Dumb Sex" thrown in). Also on the album, though not quite as impressive, are songs written by The Damned. The New York Dolls. The Stooges, The Dead Boys, The Misfits, The Sex Pistols, Johnny Thunders and Fear Of course, the big hub-bub sur rounding this album is the fact that the final, unlisted cut on the trac k is ac tually a song written by Charles Manson. Ooooooh Big deal. If you buy this album for that reason atone, get a clue. The best thing about this album is that it gives the listen er a chant e to listen to ii lot of dif ferent types of rock At tile end of the liner notes. Guns N' Roses writes “A great song can he found anywhere. Do yourself a favor and go find the originals.” Chances ore if you haven't heard of some of the original artists on this album, you'll want to rind out more about them. - Dova Chorbonnaou Ortipon fW* (monoid COMMON THREAD GROUP: Various LABEL: Gi3n! Anew Eagles album is now out. No. not the much anticipated reunion of Don Henley. Glenn Frey and the boys, but instead Common Thread: Tlw Songs of the Eagles, a series of cover songs by con temporary country artists. This should not seem too unusual because the Eagles have recently been heard as much on country stations as they are on classic rock stations. The liner notes of this album call the Eagles a second-generation "country rock hand." descrilred as a "merg ing of long-haired, scruffy rock 'n' roll music with what was then called country and western music.” This album isn't bad, but that is mostly be< ause of the Eagles' Ivrics, rather than the singers' voices. It is difficult for any pro fessional singer to go too far wrong with the ( lassie words of most Eagles' songs The keepers of this compila tion are Travis Tritt's upbeat ver sion of "Take It Easv" with a little Finn 'to REVIEWS.
