Packwood is an embarrassment for Oregonians

Robbie Reeves
An open letter to Senator
Hob Hack wood:
Dear Bob.
Whew! Quite a rough couple
of weeks you've hnd. Hob! With
the FBI serving you with a sub
poena from tin! Justice Depart
ment and the Senate voting to
give you another subpoena for
your diaries. I'd imagine that your
week was downright awful
Well. Bob. I think that you had
it coming.
I believe that almost everyone
will agree your relations with
women over the post few years
range anywhere from "boorish''
(your description) to brutish
Alter all. not [list any senator cam
make improper advance!) to over
two dozen women
Rut it didn't end there, did it7
In n news l onfervtn e this winter,
you didn't really apologize to
either the women in question or
to Oregonians in general
Instead, von tried to hi a l lie
everything on a drinking prob
lem, and that you needed to go to
a clinic for a diagnosis and to get
help.
Yes, Bob. you ihshIisI help, and
it wasn't for a drinking problem
Couldn't you have been hon
est and up-front w ith the people
that put you into office? Aren't
you supposed to represent us'
No. you hid out in Washington
for months this winter. And
when you finally did come back
to Oregon, you kept your itiner
ary a secret, ostensibly as a way
to prevent t onfrontations (In fact,
when protesters showed up at
one of your sei ret events, you
accused The Orvgonian colum
nist that revealed the information
Of ini.iun^ run
noid. Boh?)
So what hnvi' vou done lot*
Iv. Hob7 Act ording to the current
rumors on Capitol Hill, absolute
ly nothing Vou (and your
lawyers) have waffled all over the
plat e about whether you would
quit or not Other than that. Hob,
it's seemed that you have
dropped out of sight
It wms like the only thing that
you have done lately has been
obstructing the investigation of
your alleged sexual miscondui t
You let the Senate Ft hies Com
mittee have at i ess to your diaries
until someone accused vou of
criminal activity It seems that
vou tried to set up vour evvvife
with a job from a lobby is! so that
you wouldn't have to pay so
much alimony to her
Granted, it was a creative idea.
Hob. but asking for "favors like
this is also t ailed bribery Not
exactly what we would expect
from our junior senator from ()re
gore Or would we7
I imi Him iii«»i » >'-.u ■
which you purport to be vour
innermost thoughts contained
information on other legislators'
affairs You oven paid for the
transi ription oy or the yoars «ith
thousands of dollars of laxpav
er money
Wouldn't a trashy romance
novel at some groi ery store he
i heaper. Hob? Or Was this a cal
ciliated move for some liook deal'
hither way, telling the rest of the
world that von keep trm k of their
sex lives probably wasn't the
smartest thing that you could
have done
In two day s of debate earlier
this month. *14 senators voted to
subpoena your diaries, and I
doubt that it y\ as lor the juicy info
on Other people’s se\ lives
Hob. what will it take for you
to sty that with eai It passing day
you am l*s timing more and more
of an embarrassment to (irvgon'
Kobert Bvrd, a senior senator
from West V irginia, summed it
up by saving, essentially , your
Bob.
Ain clout that you might have
had is rapidly diminishing, and
it (ados earn timi> that your
lawyer suggests that you might
iput y mi ,irt> little more than a
joke to \oiir colleagues, and it
seems that there is nothing more
that you i an do lor Oregonians
in the Senate
Actually. Bob. there is one
thing that you can do for Oregon
Resign, Boh. and resign quickly
Oregon needs a senator in
Washington th.it i an he taken
seriously You have proven that
you are anything but that
Of course, you could hang
around for the next five years
until the end of your term ill t*WM
and collet t your six-figure salary
But is that really vvlial you want
for t Jregon'
Tlie next move is yours, Boh
No pun intended

Healing
It seems about time for Chris
tinns to rallv around the presi
dent's national health care plan
As biblical people who seek, to
model our lives after the exam
ple of Jesus, it seems only natur
al for the Christian community
to support health, wholeness
and healing for all people. After
all, healing the sick and restor
ing people into active participa
tion within the community was
one of Jesus' primary ministries
during his lifetime.
While Jesus said nothing
about the issues of homosexual
ity, abortion and a variety of oth
er topic s that the Christian c om
munity continually debates,
Jesus did argue public I v for the
right to heal people when they
were in need, >iihI personally
touched, lieu led and restored
people to health regardless of
their serial status. Throughout
his ministry. Jesus also instrurl
ed his followers to do likewise
For those of us in the Christ
ian community. I ask that we
allow the healing ministry of
Jesus to be our inspiration and
motivation in supporting health
cure, healing and wholeness for
all people.

Clueless KWVA
I'd just like to point out an
extremely serious error in Philip
Abraham's letter [ODE. Nov. 22).
Abraham claims that "(kVYVA's)

Indeed. a careful analysis
shows that the current listening

two Springfield residents and
their clog, <11 ouple dozen radio

dozen high school students from

error. Abraham’s point is still
quite valid.
