That kind of emotion was exactly what was missing last year in Boston College's debar ie at South Bend The Eagles were 7-0-1 and in the top to when they* headed to Notre Dame Inst year, but trailed 37-0 by halftime. "It's not just that we lost, it's how we played in losing. That's my concern, because that's my football team." Coughlin says. "And I'll tell vou what. I didn't see a lot of passion There weren't a lot of people dying to win the game. "It was a complete humiliation to everyone, and the reason it was is we didn't prepare well, we thought we were better than we were. We were distracted and we played like it. The humiliation was deep.” Passion is a key element in Coughlin's game plan. He is an intense and often humorless coach who demands similar devotion from his players. lie says a lack of enthusiasm contributed to Boston College start ing this season 0-2. including a shocking 22-21 loss at Northwestern Sept 1H "I was so disappointed that 1 was close to disillusionment, hut I wouldn’t let it happen." he says. "There was no passion, no great desire on the port of the individuals to play the game the way it's meant to lie played." But that defeat seemed to be the jolt Boston College needed. Since the loss to Northwestern, the Eagles have outscored opponents 294 12b while winning seven straight. "You've got some survival instincts in there," Coughlin says. "Some very, very outstanding young men just decided they didn't want to be mediocre. That’s really when it started.” The biggest physical improvement for the Eagles during this sea son has been the development of an offensive line that lost two players to graduation after last season. That has given Glenn Foley the chain e to turn into one of the nation's top passers. Eolev. who had one touchdown pass and four interceptions in the season-opening losses to Miami and Northwestern, has thrown 19 touchdowns and three interceptions in the last seven games. Ranked sixth in the nation in passing efficiency and eighth with total offense of 298.5 yards per game. Foley already has 2,734 puss ing vards this season He has been sacked just six times in nine games. Fullback Darnell Campbell is tied for the national scoring lead with 19 touchdowns this year and is averaging 9b yards a game. Even though his team has performed with passion and precision for the past seven weeks. Coughlin realizes it will take more than emotion to upset the Irish. "We've worked our way back into this, We re a good team," he says. "Notre Dame is a great footlaill team." Foley trying to revenge poor game at Notre Dame BOSTON (AP) — Glenn Foley wen! to Notre Dame last season with a cocky attitude, ami left a chastened man. This year, the Boston College quarterback is downright humble as he pre pares for the top-ranked Fight ing Irish. This was Foley before last year's game: "I never liked Notre Dame. I don't know where it is. and they don't throw the ball When I was growing up and watching football. I liked teams that threw the ball." And here's Foley this week: "WeTe going to have to play the game of our lives. ... If it happens to be a rout, it's a rout." The change of attitude came quickly in last year’s game. Foley was rattled by three early sacks and finished with just 121 passing yards in a 54-7 loss to Notre Dame that ended the Eagles' undefeated season. The humiliating defeat was even more bitter for Foley because he has usually saved his best performances for the Eagles' biggest games. Foley threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns last season as Boston College won for the first time at Penn State, and had 423 yards and three touchdowns this season as the Kagles won for the first time at Syracuse's Carrier Dome. "I like playing in the big games. If you don't like playing in the big games, you've got problems with yourself," Foley says. Foley, ranked sixth nationally in passing efficiency, has led No. 17 Boston College to seven straight wins after an 0-2 start this season. He has 19 touch down passes and only three interceptions in those last seven games. Foley is trying to forget about last year's loss at Notre Dame, in which the Eagles gained just 11 yards in the first half, while focusing on Saturday's game. Foley, a senior, is approach ing several school passing records Doug Flutie set in the early 1980s. He needs 30 com pletions to tie Flutie's career mark of 677.
