Ducks and Beavers fired up for another Civil War
By Steve Mims
Onpon Oatfy ( rrmtstk)
To most of the college football world. Saturday’s
Civil War game between Oregon and Oregon State
doesn't mean a lot However, to the two in-state rivals
it means everything.
Oregon and Oregon State took different directions
in 1993. with the Beavers ending the season more sat
isfied, though they have won fewer games than the
Ducks. Saturday's game is a chance to pul the perfect
ending on Oregon State's most successful season
under third-year head coach |erry Pettibone.
"A win Saturday would put the icing on the cake."
Pettibone said, "it is obvious what a great rivalry this
is. It is the most intense one I've ever been a part of.
So many graduates of the schools remain in this state
and look forward to this game."
Oregon head coach Hu h Brooks is a veteran of the
Civil War matchups, having played and coached at
Oregon State liefure taking the head coaching job at
Oregon in 1977. He said the rivalry is getting better
as the teams get stronger.
"The direction of the series has become more com
petitive the last three years." Brooks said. "Oregon
State has closed the gap - not only on us - but on the
rest of the Pacific-10 Conference as well."
The Ducks dominated the series from 1975-87, win
ning 12 of the 13 games and tying the other. Oregon
State has since won two of five games, including a 14
3 win over the Ducks in 1991. Following the win.
Oregon State carried its seniors off of the Autzen Sta
dium turf and released a video of the game entitled.
We Own The State.
"They beat us two years ago." Oregon running back
Ricky Whittle said. “And you hear about it all the
time. It seems like they forgot that we won last year."
Whittle said that though the Ducks are disappoint
ed with last weekend's 38-34 loss to Stanford, they
shouldn't have a problem getting up for Saturday's
game.
"You can always get up for the Oregon State game."
Whittle said "Especially after they gave Washington a
good game. We've only scored one touchdown in our
last three games against Oregon State."
Oregon linebacker Ernost Jones, who will have his
hands full trying to contain Oregon State’s wishbone
offense, backed up what Whittle said.
"The Civil War is not hard to get up for." Jones
said."They’re a better team than we’ve faced in recent
years We can’t just expect to show up and stop the
run."
Although many players on both teams are not from
Oregon, it has not taken them long to realize how
much the Civil War means within the state Take
wide receiver Derrick Deadwiler, a native of San
Diego, Calif., for example.
"They are going to come in with the attitude that
it s no holds barred." Deadwiler said. "Oregon ver
sus Oregon State is a sort of state Super Bowl It s all
about the state bragging rights and whose going to get
it They are going to come in with a very confident ,
attitude, and we are going to have to prove once again j
that they can't hang with us." j
Two factors that could play big roles in Saturday's .
game are the weather and bye weeks. Oregon State I
had a bye week last week, giving them two weeks to I
prepare for Oregon's offense, and Brooks admits that
may work to its advantage |
"(The bye week) gives them an advantage simply j
from a freshness standpoint." Brooks said. "Having a .
week off helps them; it gives them double the time j
we've had in practice
As for the weather, Brooks said his team doesn't
mind the rain, but if the winds pick up like they did
in Corvallis last year, that's a different story.
"Bad weather doesn’t help either team," Brooks
said. "Wind wouldn't hurt Oregon State's running
game, but it would hurt us I think our team can
throw in the rain, but the wind would hurt.”
