Ducks face OSU in season finale
By Scott Simonson
OftHjon Da*y fmotaki
Forget the intrastate rivalry Motivation won't be
a problem when Oregon and Oregon State meet in
volleyball on Friday night
A victory In Oregon would help end a long,
unhappy season on a positive note and would he
only the second win by the Ducks since mid-Sep
tember A win by Oregon State would bolster its
outside chant e of gaining a lierth in the NCAA tour
nament
For both the Due ks. 1- lt> m the Pacific-10 ( (in
ference and 4-Jt overall, and the Heavers. 7-10 in
the Par-10 and tr>-12 overall, the prospect of one
more win this season is more important than the
opponent
At least that's what the i ouches sa\
We want to get up for ii mat< h against our rival,
and we know then do the same thing Hut the fact
that this is our last game and that it's been a frus
trating vear we probablv will lie ha using on that
more than on the Beavers.” Oregon head coach Ger
ry Gregory said.
"Other than them being our sister school. I think
it's just two more teams playing one more I’.k-10
match," Oregon State head coach Jeff Mozzochi
said.
Friday's 7:0r> p m. contest at McArthur Court will
lie the final match for senior swing hitter Nicolle
I led berg. Medherg missed most of the season with
an ankle injury before seeing action last Saturday
against Cal.
It's possible that the Oregon State match may also
lie ('.regorv's last as ()regon s coach. Gregory is com
pleting his eighth season as Oregon's coach and has
ou umulated a 107-121 record.
Gregory has taken the Ducks to the NCAA tour
nament three times ami is a member of the Unit
ed States Volleyball Association Hall of Fame, but
(livgon finished seventh in the I’m -10 in 1900, ninth
in 1991 and 1992 and is assured of a lOth-place fin
ish this season
