PROFESSORSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL
RELATIONS AND PEACE
The comm nice that selects the distinguished Carlton Raymond
and Wilbena Ripley Savage Professor m International Relations
and Peace is pleased to announce an opening for a Graduate
Teaching Fellow (GTF) to assist the 1993-94 professor. Nelly
Arvelo-JtmAiee. Arvelo-Jimfnez is currently senior anthropolo
gist at the Institute Venezotano De Invcstigackmes Cientificas,
Venezuela's equivalent of the U S 's National Science Founda
tion. She has been active in advocacy for the rights of indigenous
peoples of Latin America. She holds a PhD from Cornell Univcr -
sity and has lectured widely throughout l-alin American and the
United Stales.
The GTF will assist Arvelo-Jimfnez in teaching two courses
during the spring term of 1994. consisting of a large undergradu
ate class entitled, "Constitutional Rights and Human Rights: The
Indigenous Peoples of Amazonia" and a smaller graduate seminar
entitled. "Environmentalism and Indigenous Rights: I^aun America
and Amazonia." The GTF will also wort with the Savage
Professorship Committee and its chair during winter term 1994 in
preparing for Arvclo-Jimfncz's teaching during the spring. The
GTF position may be appointed at .20 FTE for the winter, .40 for
the spring, and a possible .20 for the summer.
To qualify, candidates should be enrolled as a full-time
graduate student at the University of Oregon in a field related to
Arvelo-Jimdncz's expertise; possess a strong interest in issues
related to human rights and indigenous people; and demonstrate
strong cross-cultural communication, organization, and writing
skills. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Applicants should
submit a current vita, two letters of reference, and a short essay
indicating why they would like to work with Nelly Arvclo
Jindnez to the Office of International Affairs, 221 Johnson Hall
