"I am surprised, because
they're a much better team than
their record." he said "The flip
side of that is I'm not shocked
bec ause the conference is so
tough this year."

The Oregon men’s and
women's cross country teams
will both be represented in the
NCAA Cross Country Champi
onships Monday in Bethlehem,
Pa.
Chick Hislop, chairman of the
NCAA cross country subcom
mittee. said the Ducks were
selected as at-large teams for the
NCAA appearances after finish
ing third in the District VIII meet
last .Saturday.
The women's squad was one
of si* teams added to the NCAA
field, but the men's team sur
vived a much closer scrutiny as
just three at-large berths were
awarded.
"I'm very pleased for our run
ners." man's coach Bill
Dellinger said. "They ran well at
the district meet, and I'm happy
the NCAA noticed."
The invitation for the
women's team was expected.
The Ducks lost to four
district champions (Michigan,
Arkansas. Brigham Young and
Arizona) during the season and
had beaten Nebraska, second in
District V. and Cornell, another
at-large selection, and Arizona
throughout the year.
In addition to Oregon, Cor
nell. Georgetown. Clemson, Vir
ginia. North Carolina and Wis
consin were added to the NCAA
women's field.
The men were joined by Penn
State and Wisconsin as the at
large teams.
The meet will begin at 8 a.m.
Monday with the men's race,
followed by the women's race at
9:15 a.m.
The women were led in the
district meet by freshman Mile
na Glusac. who finished sixth,
followed by Melody Fairchild,
who finished ninth. The men
were led by Karl Keska, who
took seventh overall.
