Oregon and Stanford ready for Saturday shoot-out
By Steve Mims
Ottrgon Qaity Cm&aKi
Stanford head coach Bill Walsh said this week that
he believed Oregon and his Cardinals would have a
tough time getting up for Saturday's game because
they would be looking forward to games against their
respective rivals the following week.
Fat i hence
Although the Cardinal (3-6,1-5) may In- looking for
ward to The Big Came against California next week
end. Oregon (5-4, 2-4) knows it must win both of its
final two games to qualify for a bowl game All the
cliches like "we've got our hacks to the wall" and
'there’s no tomorrow" apply to Oregon tins weekend.
It's a different story for the Cardinal, who are just
playing out the string for this season Walsh said he
plans to give playing time this week to younger play
ers who will be the core of Stanford's future Some
freshmen who will see time include running backs
Creg Cornelia and Quincy Jacobs, along with quarter
back Scott Frost.
On paper, Saturday's game would appear to be a
shoot-out between two teams with high-powered
offenses and beat-up defenses. Both quarterbacks are
on pace to set Pacific-10 Conference records this sea
son for total offense and passing yardage.
Stanford senior Steve Stenstroin leads the league
in total offense with 2,703 yards, 173 more yards than
Oregon's Danny O'Neil. Both are within reach of the
conference record of 3,155 yards field by Washington
Slate's Timm Rosenbach. Stenstroin leads the league
with 2,869 yards passing, just ahead of O’Neil's 2.651
yards. The Pac-10 record for passing yards in a season
is 3,242. held by former Cardinal John Elway.
"Steve Stenstroin is a very impressive player.” Ore
gon head coach Rich Brooks said. "They are throwing
the ball as well anybodv in the nation without much
of a running game and that's hard to do. They find
people open all the time and Stenstroin stands in
there and takes shots "
Although Stanford and Oregon are 1-2 in the con
ference in passing offense, they rank 10th and ninth
in rushing, respectively. Stanford is the only Poo-10
team averaging less than 100 yards rushing (it aver
ages 72.1) and they rank dead last in the nation in that
category as well.
Kllery Roberts leads the Cardinal in rushing with
t9f> yards, an average of only 43.9 yards per game No
other Cardinal is averaging more than 20 yards per
game rushing This would appear to be good news for
the Ducks, who gave up 389 yards rushing to Arizona
last week, but Oregon has struggled to defend the pass
as well this year.
"We need to regroup coining off one of our worst
defensive performances in recent memory," said
Brooks, who can pass Len Casanova for the most wins
in school history if he gets his 83rd win Saturday. "It
was very discouraging to look at the tapes and see our
!ai k of aggressiveness (at Arizona) "
O'Neil will look to pick opart a defense that has had
to regroup this year after losing linebai kcr Ron
George, cornerback Darrien Gordon and safety John
Lynch to the NFL. The Cardinal start sis seniors on
defense, but mix in a lot of youngsters as well Line
backers Coy Gibbs and Toby Norwood and safety
Kevin Garnett have been the most impressive mem
bers of the Cardinal defense this year
"I felt we might have a defense that was acceptable
and have a bright future." Walsh said "Wo are dis
appointed in how we’ve done because you can't do
much worse "
The Ducks will see quite a change across the line
when they line up on offense this week compared to
last week. Stanford ranks dead Inst in the conference <
in rushing defense, passing efficiency defense, total >
defense and scoring defense, four categories that Ore- \
gun's opponent last week. Arizona, leads the confer
ence in.
