Volleyball travels to Washington
By Scott Simonson
Of&gon Q&tty t m&aki
the Oregon volleyball team Inis won one match
during the last eight weeks Now, its goal is three
wins in its final five matches
It wouldn't be impossible It wouldn't redeem a
4-17 season, either. But It's better than the alter
native. whic h is extending a seven-match losing
st reak
"I haven't sensed any quit in this team all year,”
head < oac h Gerry Gregory said. "We've set a goal
for the next five matches We're heavy underdogs
in two of them, but we want to try and win three ”
Oregon makes its final road trip of the season
when it travels to Washington and Washington State
this weekend The Ducks are in last place in the
Pacific-JO Conference with a 112 record.
Considering Oregon's season so far. three wins
in three weeks seems far-fetched. However, its
remaining m hedule includes matches against the
conference's seventh, eighth, and ninth-place teams
Washington, 2-10 in the Pac-10. is the ninth-place
team. Oregon beat the Huskies in three games in
their first meeting The Ducks plav at Washington
on Saturday night.
"I think we've probably been eyeing each other
in an interesting way this year," Gregory said.
"We re saving. Hoy, we can heat this team.' and
they've probably been say ing the same thing about
us.”
The Ducks open the road tr^i at Washington State
on Friday night. Pullman prides itself on earning a
home court advantage by drawing big crowds.
"I wouldn't say it’s an intimidating place to play,"
Gregory said "They're an obnoxious crowd, and
it's probably as rude of a crowd as we face at any
time during the season. It can be distracting, but
hopefully we have the maturity to overcome that.
They won't win any popularity contests with the
coaches.”
Quick hitter Karissa Meith, whose 3.fif> kills pur
game average leads Oregon, is still recovering from
an ankle injury. She is expected to be a starter this
weekend
