Duck-Cougar rivalry heating up
By Steve Mims
O'fHji'tfy i mot t j
Oregon's 4 r * • U 3 win over
Washington Stale last Saturday
was just another chapter in the
renewed rivalry between the
two teams
Although the Ducks have
rei entlv mastered the Cougars,
winning seven of the last eight
contests, the two teams have
built a mutual dislike for each
other, especially the past two
years
The rivalry got especially
nastv Inst year when a bench
clearing brawl broke out during
Oregon's .14-17 win at Pullman.
Let Oregon running back Kicky
Whittle tell how it started
"They were talking trash and
gi\ ing us little push-offs.” Whit
tle snid "They pushed off on
our offense and our offense
pushed back I guess that's how
it started
The trash-talking for this
year's matchup began weeks
before the game when Washing
ton Stole All-American line
bai ker Anthony McClanahan
was quoted as i oiling the Dm ks
"dirty.”
However, it was the Cougars'
dirly ploy that ended up hurting
them last Saturday, as they com
mitted 1 1 penalties, including
three personal fouls that result
ed in Hi Oregon points
A personal foul on McClona
han on Oregon's first possession
gave the Ducks a first down.

Washington State's Torey

hall, giving Oregon a first down
Oregon wide receiver (iristm
MoLemore told reporters after
wards what happened
"1 cut him. rolled him up and
blocked him good." Mi I.emore
said "He was on top of me and
slammed my face, so I didn't let
him get up. He was upset saying.
He's holding me. ref' The next
thing you know he said. I'm
gonna break vour — net k
Mi I.emore '
"I said. Kef. are vou going to
throw a flag' I was |ust being
funny about it. but they threw
the flag on him. and 1 got him
out of his game
Three plays later O'Neil found
Mi I.emore on a beautiful pass

end zone The pass was just

I hotter
I exi hanged a few words
with him after I scored the
touchdown." Mi I.emore said I
usually don't do that, but I did
Washington State's third per
sonal tout came after a five-yard
loss by Whittle on first down
So, instead of giving Oregon a
second doyvn and 13 yards at
the Washington State 35 yard
line. Oregon had first and 10 at
tfie 50 yard line Three plavs lat
er Oregon scored again, on a
pass from MoLemore to tight
end Josh Wilcox, giving the
Dm ks a 39-23 lead
"They pushed off on me a
couple of times," Whittle said.
"Hut we don't have time for that.
As vou saw. two times we
rushed down in four plays and
scored
It's probably no coincidence
that all the trash-talking
oi i urred in a game that marked
the return of Oregon fullback
Juan Shedrii k Shedrii k is well
known for Ins ability to talk dur
ing liif game, wither to pump up
his team or frustrate another.
Shodrick was not exported to
play Ins ause of an elbow injury,
but he did, and he let the
Cougars know right away
"I ran bat k and said I'm out
here. I'm hack.'" Shodrick said
after the game
Shedric k irritated a few
Cougars with his voice during
Oregon's win over the Cougars
last vear, but he said they did
not cooperate yvith Ins conversa
tion starters on Saturday.
"They know I like to talk,"
Shodrick said. "Today they
didn't talk to me that much.
They said. Why do you keep
coming at me?' and I said
Because I like you guys."'
Whittle explained just what it
is that Shedric k does to irritate
the opponent during a game
"Juan got under McClann
han's skin last game and this
game," Whittle said. "Kor some
reason, he can’t take the little
i omments Juan say s one-liners
ami it really gets Mi Clanahan
crazy, gets him out of his game.
"Basically it is just one-liners.
When fie comes up with them,
y\e look at each other, give a
smirk .Hid say, 'He's hack ' The
thing about it is you never hear
hull repeat the same one. it's
real funny "
Mi (llanahttii had nine tackles
Saturday, hut was not a major
factor in the game lie had no
quarterback sacks, and O'Neil
said the only times McClanahau
bothered him was "in the piles.”
Oregon's ability to keep its
composure and pic k tip only
five penalties, including no per
sonal fouls, was a big reason
why the Ducks were able to get a
big win over the Cougars.
"We pride ourselves on not
retaliating and getting stupid
penalties." Mi lemore said "We
did that very well."
Whittle said the Ducks prefer
to just play the game, and do the
retaliating afterwards
"You do your duty," Whittle
said "Then talk trash."
