    UCLA beats Arizona to tie for Pac-10 lead

The Bruins put themselves in
that position Saturday night by
dominating both sides of the ball
and overpowering No. 7 Ari
zona. 37-17.
”1 felt we'd win the game, but
not the way it went down."
UCLA coach Terry Donahue
said. "People said this would be
a Rose Bowl game 1 felt it would
only be a Rose Bowl game for
Arizona.
"In this league, the teams are
so good, the teams are so evenly
matched, this is not going to !m a

long way from laying claim to
any championships. The victory
tonight put us in a three week
tournament."
Wayne Cook threw two touch
down passes, and Bjorn Merten
kicked two field goals to give the
Bruins a 20-0 first-half lead
against the country's top
defense.

enough for the Bruins (r>-2).

after he suffered a slight knee

Johnson had a career-high 32

third straight game after opening
the season with five consecutive
wins.

Oregon running back Kicky
Whittle, who has been inconsis
tent for the Ducks thus far. had
his best game of the season. He
led the Oregon running attack
with 16 carries for 52 yards,
including a couple of big runs at
crucial times. Whittle also
caught five passes for 77 yards.
Whittle's biggest reception of
the game came early in the sec
ond cjuartor when O’Neil hit
him on a screen pass, and Whit
tle charged 36 yards, breaking a
tackle at the five-yard line and
going into the end zone to give

Whittle's 4fi-yard kickoff
return set up Oregon's next
touchdown. Trailing 1413 in
tile second quarter. O'Neil lofted
a pass in the corner of the end
zone, and receiver Cristin
Mclatmore made a leaping, fin
gertip catch to put the Ducks up
19-14 at halftime.
McLemore caught five passes
for H2 yards and also threw his
second touchdown of the season
in the fourth quarter when he
took a pitch from O'Neil at the
Cougars' five-yard line and hit
tight end |osh Wilcox in the end
zone, giving the Ducks a 39-23
lead. It was Wilcox's first touch
down for the Ducks.
Oregon running back Dwayne
Jones also had his first touch
down in a Duck uniform when
he took his only run of the day
20 yards for Oregon's final score
of the day.

Phiiyaw carried the ball only
twice but accumulated 12 yards
and scored from three yards out

injuries to the crew in the Ore
gon secondary.
Duck receiver Derrick Dead
wiler led an Oregon drive in the
third quarter that broke the
game open. Deadwtler caught a
31-yard pass to get the Ducks in
Washington State territory. Two
plays later. O'Neil hit an open
as-Denny's Deadwiler for a 44
yard touchdown Deadwiler
caught only one more pass on
the day and finished with 75
yards receiving.

ed twice and sat out most of the
fourth quarter because of recur
ring soreness in his passing
shoulder.
Johnson threw for 2fi3 yards
and two touchdowns in the first
half, and his passing also set up
two short scoring runs by
Shawn Walters to put Southern
Cal up 27-14.
Though Walters managed
only 17 yards on 11 carries in
the first half, he helped South
ern Cal take command early,
scoring on a 2-yard burst up the
middle to give the Trojans a 12
0 lead.

STANFORD. Calif. (AP) —
Steve Stenstrom's 11-yard
touchdown pass to Murk Harris
in the fourth quarter helped
Stanford break a four-game los
ing streak with a 31-27 victory
over Oregon State on Saturday.
Stenstrom's third touchdown
of the day put Stanford (3-5, 1-4
Pac-10) ahead 31-21 with li:38 to
play. The Cardinal quarterback,
who threw for more than 300
yards for the seventh game in a
row, was 29-of-41 for 402 yards
without an interception.
Oregon State, which trailed 24
7 in the third quarter, scored on
J.J. Young's 12-yard run with 2:09
loft to cut the Cardinal's load to
31-27 and recovered an onside
kick. The Beavers' rally ended
when Eliel Swinton picked off
Rahim Muhammad's pass, and
Stanford ran out the remaining
time.

week," McLemore said. “I was
about to run it. and all of a sud

just a pass I threw up there, and

Oregon got its final points
when junior fullback Dwayne
(ones rumbled 20 yards for a
touchdown, the first of his Ore
gon career The touchdowns by
Wilcox and (ones each culmi
nated four-play drives in the
fourth quarter.
Oregon's injury-plagued
defense bent a few times but did
a good job of limiting the
Cougars. The Cougars started
Chad DeCrenier at quarterback,
and he completed 26 passes but
needed 51 attempts to do so.
The game was tight early on
as the teams exchanged leads
four times in the first half before
Oregon look a 19-14 load at half
time. O'Neil found Whittle on a
screen pass that Whittle took 36
yards for a touchdown to give
the Ducks a 10-7 lead in the first
quarter.
McLemore made an incredible
grab for Oregon's second touch
down on a pass that O'Neil put
just over the hands of Washing
ton State defensive hack Torey
Hunter. The Ducks went for a
two-point conversion, but
O’Neil's pass to Derrick Dead
wiler was incomplete.
"I threw it deep, high and
long." O'Neil said of the touch
down pass. "1 just didn't want
the WSU guy to have a chance to
get it. Cristin is just unbeliev
able."
The win put Oregon at 2-3
overall in the Pacific-10 Confer
ence with three games left in the
season. It also gives the Ducks a
much-needed confidence boost
heading into Saturday's game at
conference co-leader Arizona.
"This was big," O'Neil said.
"To put the points up should
boost the team really nigh. We
should be fired up next week "
