Ducks begin race for postseason play at home against WSU
By Steve Mims
(>»*0C»> CM»■> I mt»ak!
The Oregon football season began with high hopes
and Rose Bowl talk, but injuries, comebacks and
untimely poor performances have left the Ducks in
critical condition
The Ducks' situation is now simple; they must win
all four remaining games to guarantee a 1h)wI Imrth. or
win three of four to (*• in position for postseason plat
Oregon's final run begins Saturday when it faces
Washington State at 1 p in. at Aut/.en Stadium
The Cougars are coming off a i rushing ‘t-fi loss at
Arizona when kicker Aaron Price's 49-vard field goal
went wide left on the last play of the game A win
would have put Washington State in a tie for first
place in the Pat ifi« 10 Conference, and a tie would
have kept them in the Rose Bowl hunt.
"We an* trying to put the game behind us.” Wash
ington State All-American linebacker Anthonv
McClanahan said "Bui it's liarci. We should have
won the game; our defense out played theirs.”
The Cougars dropped to fifth place in the confer
ence with the loss, hut they still have a lot to play tor
The Rose Bowl is nearly impossible now, hut WSl
still has a shot at playing in a howl game for the set
ond consecutive year.
The Cougars have a different look this year behind
a defense that is ranked sixth in the country in total
defense and set ond nationally in rushing defense
Washington State's defense, spearheaded In
McClanahan, is giving up only 5H yards rushing per
game
Oregon's rushing game should face its stiffest test of
the year against the Cougars. Oregon running backs
Sean Burwnll and Ricky Whittle have been hobblec
by injuries throughout the year, hut both appear to la
healthy for the first time this year.
The improved defense means tfiat the Cougars no
longer need to rely on their high-powered offense to
win games. Fans should not he surprised if the game
is low scoring this year, as opposed to the past five
Oregon-Washington State matchups, w hen at least
one of the teams scored in excess of :tt) points
Washington State has experimented recently w ith a
two-quarterbat k offense featuring sophomore Shawn
Deeds and junior Chad DeCrenier. Cougar head coat h
Mike Price said he plans to continue rotating quarter
hacks during the game.
"During and after the game I wasn't sure how effor -
tive it was." Price said. "But after looking at the
videos I think it was extremely effective Chad DeGre
| nier made the third down plays four of the five times
he went into (tie game."
i Oregon's offense w ill he looking to find die explo
siveness it showed most of the year before last week's
breakdown at Washington Oregon quarterback
Danny O'Neil ranks ninth nationally in total offense,
but his passing efficient v took a severe blow when
be tossed sis interceptions against the Huskies
"Danny had a bad day at the office, so to speak."
Brooks said "But fie had a tough second half against
USO and fie bounced back against Arizona State He
is a confident quarterback and a tough player ! think
he’ll do just fine this week
O'Neil may need to have a spectacular game if (lo
gon's defense doesn't get healthy soon. Defensive
linemen Sililu Malepeui and Murk Slymen are out,
and fellow linemen Gary Williams and Troy Hailey
are questionable. In addition, defensive bai k Alex
Moldon and linebacker Jeremy Asher are doubtful
With three of its final four games at home. Oregon
is in a situation where it can possibly qualify for a
tiowl game without winning on the road However, a
loss at home forces the Ducks to win next week at
sixth-ranked Arizona to keep its bowl hopes alive
