UCLA prepares for Arizona after scare against OSU
I.OS ANGELES (AP) — A not so funny
thing almost happened to UCLA and Ari
zona on their wav to Saturday night's
Pacific-10 Conference showdown at the
Rose Howl both were in jeopardy of
being tied or beaten.
The No. lr> Bruins beat host Oregon
State 20-17 on Saturday thanks in port to
a missed 32-yard field goal by Oregon
State s Brooke Knight with 4:22 to piny.
The kick, whic h would have tied the
game, was wide by inches.
Earlier in the day, No. 7 Arizona beat
Washington Stale 9-fi because Aaron
Pric e of the Cougars barely missed a 4‘l
vard field goal with two sis onds left that
would have tied the game
"I felt very fortunate about our game at
Oregon Stale," UCLA coach Terrv Don
ahue said Monday. "The game could
have gone in the other direction It was
nice to win one of those games."
I1CLA lost its first two games of the sea
son — to California and No. 6 Nebraska
— by a total of three points
Since those narrow defeats, the Bruins
have won five games in a row, their
longest winning streak since they opened
the 1088 season with seven straight wins
Oregon State entered the game with a
.1-4 record, having won only one game in
ear h of the 1990, 1991 and 1992 seasons
"1 think the Oregon State team played
very inspired and they played very well."
Donahue said "We played hard
"If they're no good, than we're not any
good either They gave us all we wanted
I'm glad we wee able to maybe not play
that well and win."
Arizona (7-0 overall. 4-0 in the Par • 10)
Right now, Arizona* got
the best defense in the
history of the NCAA
against the rush
— Terry Donahue
UCLA coach
is alone atop the conference standings.
UCLA (5-2, .1-1) is tied for second with
Southern (jil and Washington, which is
ineligible for the Rose Bowl.
Arizona has already beaten Southern
Cal, and doesn't play Washington this
season So a victory over UCLA would
put the Wildcats in great shape in the
Rose Bowl race and ail but eliminate the
Bruins from contention
"We'd boll nr not let them win,” Don
ahue said.
After Arizona, the Bruins have road
games against Washington State and
Southern C j»l sandwiched around a home
game against Arizona State. After UCLA,
the Wildcats have a home game against
Oregon followed by road games against
California and Arizona State.
Donahue is well mvarn Ihol Arizona
leads the country in rushing defense (15.1
yards per game) and total defense (20H.1
yards per game).
"Right now, Arizona's got the best
defense in the history of the NCAA
against the rush." lie said. "That's a
shocking statistic. Arizona is a great, great
defensive football team."
