Former coach unsure of future
COEUR D'ALENE. Idaho (AP) — Don Monson.
who pushed University of Idaho basketball into
the national limelight in the late 1970s and early
1980s and later coached at Oregon, may have
coached his last game.
Munson said he has turned down an invitation
to return to Australia's pro basketball league and
is uncertain if he will pursue another coaching job.
"I'm realistic enough to know there's not a lot of
people who are going to hire a (>1 year-old coach."
Monson said last week from Ins Spokane home
Monson returned to Spokane last week after
coaching Adelaide's team in the National basket
ball League of Australia.
Monson said hi* thoroughly enjoyed Ins experi
ence in Australia However, he balked when man
agement asked him to sign a three-year contract,
spend 11 months a year hi Australia and work
more with youth teams
"It was a well-organized situation as far as the
team I was working for." Monson said. "The
league was probably more organized and better
than 1 thought it would be."
Munson's team, the West End Eagle Super Six
ers. posted a 14 12 ns ord and came in seventh in
a 14-team league.
"I had a really neat hunch of kids, or players ...
they were very enjoyable," Monson said.
Munson's players ranged from 20 to 35 years of
age. Two foreigners, usually Americans, are per
mitted to play on each team.
"You didn't have to worry about kids grades, or
who's in class, or at the study table, or recruits."
noted Monson. who was fired last year after nine
.seasons at Oregon.

Monson and his wife, Deanna, lived on the

the remainder of the season after
surgery on his left knee. Wash
ington State coach Mike Price
said Tuesday.
Wolfe, a 6-foot-3. 300-pound,
fifth-year senior from Puyallup,
has had 11 operations on his left
knee, including major surgery
that sidelined him all of last sea
son.
After starting five games this
season. Wolfe had arthroscopic
surgery on the knee anil did not
play against Arizona State or
