Auto service finds new, used cars

The car buying experience no longer has to be (he
dreaded nightmare that many feel it (o bo.
A relatively new service has opened in the Eugene
area that offers people an alternative to the often time
consuming and frustrating job of finding a car This pro
gram. which appeals especially to the college crowd,
make car buying quick, affordable and perhaps best of
all—hnsslo free.
"Auto Alternative" is the idea of 1993 University of
Oregon graduate, Shane Gilbert He saw the need for
such a service after witnessing first hand the cut-throat
mentality among dealers Customers sense this competi
tion upon setting foot on a car lot and being surround
ed by a mob of salesmen.
"I feel that buying a car should lx* a fun and exciting
experience, not something to be dreaded. So. tin* idea
of the Auto Alternative was developed," Gilbert said
About six months ago. Gilbert started his new program
that provides three basic services. He locates new and
used i ars and tars for people who hove a had < rod it his
tory or none at all.
"We inn help pretty much anybody who comes to us.”
Gilbert said "People often buy a car through this pro
gram because it is so easy and it con help build one s
credit hack up We know how easy it is for students
experiencing freedom for the first time They sometimes
get themselves in a bad credit situation before they know
what they've done. We can usually help them when no
one else is willing to."
In addition to finding c-ars for people with bad or no
credit. Gilbert says he can also locate new and used cars
for people at prices usually below those they can got
themselves. Shone buys his new and used cars from
dealerships and wholesaler lots.
"I just pass the savings on to the customer. If for some
reason I see there is a Imtter deal elsewhere. I'll tell you.
People really like the relaxed and honest atmosphere we
offer here. It's not the hard sell' type motto common at
other dealerships." Gilbert said
Anyone interested in this service needs only to call or
go to the store It just takes a matter of minutes to get the
process moving |ust inform them on what type of car is
desired and the search begins from there.
Sound to good to be true? There must he a huge fee
involved in the whole thing, right ' Wrong.

locating of a car. If wu find one that the customer doesn't
want or like, we continue our search until we find one
that they are happy with Once a «r is found and agreed
upon, we give them a set price and our fee is included in
that. We don't try to scam people by tacking on small
charges after the fact,” Gilbert said.
The Auto Alternative is located inside the Valley Kiv
er Outer in a small kiosk between the Hon Marche and
Montgomery Ward

Faculty get grant
to aid program

The National Endowment for the Humanities
awarded a $150,000 grant to the University for sev
eral faculty members serving as consultants on a
project to improve national Japanese immersion
programs.
The project has two proposals, one being to estab
lish a nationwide professional network association
for Japanese immersion teachers, school adminis
trators and curriculum and instruction specialists.
Second, the project will develop a proficiency
assessment tool to train teachers so that they
be able to evaluate the effectiveness of various mate
rials and methods employed In the immersion (.lass
rooms
"Ti rnfect's goals are to improve networking
of all J«, .emersion teaching and instruction,"
said Hire- .oka. co-director of the university
Japanese language program and an associate pro
fessor of Japanese. "We intend to be the organiz
ers and service providers involved with the pro
ject.” she said.
According to a published University report, the
project is expected to reach at least 100 teachers,
administrators and curriculum and Instruction spe
cialists involved with Japanese immersion schools.
The report estimated 1.000 students are currently
enrolled in Japanese immersion programs.
The National Endowment for the Humanities
grant is anticipated to fund the establishment of the
project's national organization and support its activ
ities for three years beginning in 1994-95.
The University faculty members are playing a key
role in the development of an integrated state-wide
Japanese language and cultural program. The Uni
versity is planning to implement a master's degree
program in Japanese language teaching and peda
gogy in by 1994.
"These proposals are very important because each
of these programs has faced challenges problems
without a national foundation of immersion edu
cation support system, leaving many programs in
isolation at times.” Katoaka said. "We're looking
forward to seeing the proposals create future bene
fits for the schools,” she said.
