LETTERS Moral scorecard The letter by Rob Peterson and Kristin Unwin titled "Berg off Base" [ODE. Oct. 12) was the final straw for this preacher’s kid. My father is a minister, I'm Chris tian. I'm pro-choice and I am a registered Democrat. The Pat Robertsons of the world have mado the word "Christian" synonymous with pro-life and anti-homosexual conservatism, which is scary and dangerous. Fundamentalists have started keeping a scorecard of morals in this country and have appointed themselves as judges to who and what is right or wrong. God does not need anybody to keep store for her and neither do I. My choices and my body are between me and God. and that is as far as it goes. Being a Christian is a very per sonal thing and it's not about judgment on anyone. It is about being the best people we can pos sibly be. Rob Peterson. Kristin Unwin and the like may say I'm not Christian because I'm pro choice and I can’t believe homo sexuality is morally wrong, but they would only be passing a judgment on me that wasn't theirs to pass. For all of the students out there who think "Christian" and "con servative" are the same word. I just want to say they don't have to be. Can't we just put away are scorecards and start worrying abut our own lives and our own actions? Let's leave the judging to someone more qualified. Leta Hamilton International Studies/French Housing mishap My husband, son and I just arrived in Eugene six weeks ago. We were told when my husband registered for the undergraduate program that there would be a good likelihood that we would secure University housing for the full. In eurlv August, we were told that at the very least we would get a two-bedrooin apartment in Amazon. A week later. 1 called to confirm the status of our housing assignment and was informed that a moratorium had been placed on all new family hous ing assignments. The housing representative said they had just received a "decree" from the president's office stating that funds had I wen secured for the demolition of Amazon, and all families cur rently residing at Amazon would need to be evacuated from the complex as soon as possible. These residents would obvious ly receive priority for relocation, constricting the availability of University family housing. Being new to the area, we are unaware of the politics sur rounding this controversy, but we am surprised that a decision that could impact so many could be made so suddenly with no pro visions. Needless to say this seemingly arbitrary series of decisions has imposed great hardship on us as well as many others. I think the University needs to take a hard look at how this was handled, reevaluate its decision if neces sary, and either make appropri ate reparations (such as rental subsidies) to families involved or at least insure that a mishap does not happen again. There** Ptcado Eugene No NAFTA I Find it the ultimate in ironies that I. as a socialist, should be agreeing with a capitalist bil lionaire about an issue relating to the welfare of workers. Howev er. Ross Perot is absolutely cor rect in his opposition to NAFTA There is a saying that those who do not loam form history are doomed to repeat it. There was another free-trado agreement — the Open Door Policy in China The British Hast India Compa ny imported opium into China, which converted many Chinese people into opium addicts. Little children worked 16 hours a day in factories where they were often locked in all night. In match factories they got phosphorus bums all over their bodies. When they died, they were simply thrown on the trash heap for the dogs to eat. Supporters of NAFTA say a similar situation couldn’t occur today because child labor laws exist and environmental organi zations have power, Well, judg ing from the Maquiladora facto ries. I think they are being overly optimistic Pollution near these factories is so had that children are being born without brains or with numerous other terrible birth defects. American workers will lose because high-paying manufac turing jobs will translocate to Mexico. Mexican workers will lose due to bad working condi tions. low pay and no benefits. It is a lose-lose proposition for everyone except the American capitalists. Gary Sudborough Bellflower, Calif. Sex not bad This is in response to Robyn Mage's "ODE soils so%"[OPF Oct 11). With all duo respect, Robyn, tnko a pill. Perhaps it would be therapeutic, if you could accept the the inherent beauty of the human hotly and what pleasure and happiness it can bring. I found the article on Lol lipops very interesting and informative It’s good to know that such establishments are available to adults 1H-20 It is not degrading to women. If some women choose to show their bodies to others or even if thoy chose to share it in some way. it’s their body, not your’s. It is short-sighted and ignorant to deny the sexual desires wo all share as human animals, desires we can not always act out. Lollipops and kindred enter tainment provide a harm loss outlet for both sexes Yes. there are strip clubs for women! Sex is not bad It is the people who ustf it to harm others, through rape and dysfunctional relationships, who are had. Both men and women are pic tured in advertisements to sell products. Those pictures are made to he provocative and pleasing to the consumer. Is not a man "being sold" if his bore chest is pictured or a profile is revenlingly shown? Perhaps we should start considering our selves human beings first and then women. If you're afraid men will be looking at you as a sex object, consider the possibil ity that they could just be look ing at an attractive girl. Wouldn't you glance at a good looking guy? It's not a crime. Maybe it's time we grew out of our prudish attitude toward our natural reproductive desires. There are many mom important problems out there and we as human beings need to unite and respect each other for as human beings Mary E.P. Wlskerchen Eugene What's a Newton?
