ing the same song.
A lot of it has to do with Parker's words, the
band members sav.
"Getting to know Sholen's lyric* ... I take it
to heart.” said Mike Bass. Lincoln Brigade
drummer. "Knowing that it is bad shit, and
then turning that around."
“I really don't think anyone sounds quite
like Shalon," Hartquist said. "It sounds like
we're bragging, but some of it's mind-bend
ing-"
Parker takes a more humorous approach to
his job ns the main lyricist and mush writer,
citing l. Ron Hubbard's book Diantttlcs as
Innovation.
"it's self-help," he said. "Chapters seven
through nine are my favorite — those are
about the teen-age years "
Lint oln Brigade themselves are still young.
I he band formed just prior to Inst Christmas
break and gained a reputation playing campus
parties, which initially included such covers
as "Hong Kong Fooey" and Pink Floyd's "Nile
Song "
"Don't put down Pink Floyd In the paper."
Hartquist said. "I don't want to In? associated
with Pink Floyd."
Lincoln Brigade continued practicing and
playing and practicing and playing. To date,
the group has almost 30 original songs and
has appeared in local bars (John Henry's being
the favorite), including a few Portland shows.
The band member* plan to move to Port
land alter Bass. Cobb and Hartquist graduate
from the University this fall, and a national
road trip/tour is something they would like to
eventually do.
Actually, getting out of the Eugene music
scene makes leaving the priority.
"People in this town are just so apathetic
toward new music. This town is so polar*
ized," Bass said. ‘There's just no middle
ground — I hate that.
"We want to end up on the MTV' Beach
House next summer." he |oked.
But before the move to Portland. Cobb said
Lincoln Brigade plan to make a stop in one of
Oregon's lesser-known backwoods stops.
"After the tour of Drain," Cobb said.
"Greater Drain,” Parker said
The jokes never stop. When discussing Bob
Dylan — whom Lincoln Brigade covers on
"One More Cup of Coffee" — Parker becomes
disgusted over the fact that the young star of
television’s Blossom got to meet the legendary
songwriter and Elvis Costello at a show.
"Dylan actually invited her backstage,"
Parker said “I think that's wrong."
And whore does Lincoln Brigade get their
energy to keep up the humor and music?
'We're beer-powered." Harttjuist said.
"We're an alcohol-burning funny kind "
The band is ns funny off oi the stage us it
can lie serious on the stage. All l>e«r aside,
llartquisl is on stage with as much of a desire
to play bass as to play off his feelings.
"It's like a legal way to get my frustrations
out and vent myself." he said "Every time
we're out there, we have a serious bon® to
pick und play our asses off."
It shows
Uncoln Brigade will nest play in a KWVA
sponsored show with four other local hands
an the EMU lawn Oct. 22. beginning at 4 p m
If it is mining, the show will he moved inside
to the EMU Ballroom

a label lo pul on them Redd
Kross are heavy by any defini
tion. but they am far from heavy
metal. The choruses are catchy,
but they are not a pop band.
So I guess they just fall into the
category as one of those bands
that are loud, but not obnoxious
I won't say much more,
because, frankly. I'm a little
afraid of Redd Kross followers
I’ll just say this is a very good
album, and leave it at that
Hut probably not ns good as
their old stuff.

NO BITING
★
GROUP Greta
, LABEL StjrdC-U
! Mercury
Every four or five years, heavy
metal inevitably takes the dive to
being regarded as lame crap, only
to be eventually resurrected ns
hands like Slaughter and Twist
ed Sister feel the boost by selling
millions of albums.
Greta missed the boat. Their
only hope now is that they are
able to stay together until 1996
when the next boom in popular
ity of metal bands is expected to
hit again.
"No Biting." is not a tumble
album, but Greta's sound is stale
and worn out There's not much
on this album that jumps out at
you.
I'm all for bands that are try
ing to lie the leaders in bringing
back metal as a popular genre of
music, but Greta doesn't commit
to doing that
Instead, they make half-assed
attempts at cracking into the
"alternative" genre with lame
voice distortions and fuzzy gui
tars
That would be fine if they
still k with the fuzz, it would still
be crap, but at least they'd sell
some rei ords And. going for a
hard-core heavy metal album
would have been respectable
because although they wouldn't
sell any albums, at least they'd
Slav true to their mush
But what they do is go walk
the tight ro|H» lie!ween metal and
grunge As .1 result, what they
come up with is a little of both
worlds: A boring album that
won’t sell.
Who knows, this could catch
the fancy of music lovers every
where. Greta could even get as
popular as Slaughter, if they're
lucky. But 1 doubt it.
