alistic. thinking we can solve all the world's prob
lems. or we have our own selfish motives for doing
something.
We never learn, it seems.
ODE Is it your interest in these kinds of issues
that led you to write for the Insurgent7
Andy I like writing about international-type top
ics. and that was the best vehicle to do it
ODE Are you going to write more this year than
what you've already done for the first issue?
Andy: I'm really holding off on making a com
mitment, hut there's things that I've got on my mind
ODE Is it going along better down at the Insur
gent now that they have some different people?
Andy I'm pretty confident in Cinde Rosen balm
and Michelle Parks. I know them well. I wouldn't
ex per t much bullshit this year — they want to do
it for the right reasons
ODE What other groups have you been involved
with here and at Lane?
Andy I first started getting involved as a senator
in student government at lane, and then I was stu
dent bodv president the next year Then I came over
here, and during that year I was in the Gulf War
And then when I name back. I pretty much stayed
out of everything. (Former ASUO President) Jen
Hills asked me to apply to the IFC. and I got sucked
into that.
Last year I worked for the AS! IO as assistant state
affairs coordinator, but it was a bunch of shit — it
was a waste of time.
ODE When you wore president at I .one. what
kind of money were you making?
Andy: Almost $f>»() a month, plus tuition.
ODE: 1 think that's more than (ASUO President)
Eric Bowen makes.
Andy: Oh. yeah, it's a lot more.
ODE Why7
Andy I don't know — he should make more Not
that they really do a lot. but if they're going to spend
that much time, they should at least I* able to moke
enough to live on.
ODE Me and Ed Carson almost mockingly ran
for the ASUO Executive last year, but we kind of
boged out on it at the end. We kind of ran out of gas
Andy That would've been great. That would've
been a good year.
I don't think many people got into it too much
*Some of the things I’ve seen
... I think I can appreciate life
a lot more.’
Andy Harris,
University student
Inst year It wasn't like the year before I probably
wouldn't have even voted Inst year, except I didn't
really care for that Mark Johnson guy too much.
I thought he thought he knew a little too much.
His comments during an ASIJO debate about I.ar
ry Campbell being tired of political science majors
hassling him — that bothered me a little bit.
ODE: Did you read about that in the Emerald ...
or. iK'tter yet. do you read the Emerald'
Andy Every day ... I pick it up. I think most stu
dents pick it up and leaf through it
Hut I think that most people who know about it
look forward to the Commentator coming out. I
know l do.
They're going to slam people more so than the
Insurgent. I think people look at the front page of
the Insurgent ... they look at the most prominent
story, and it's boring ns hell. Hut I don't think we
have to worry about that this year.
One criticism that I have of the Emerald is that it
is .. too mainstream; it presents the news, hut not
a whole lot of analysis, not a lot in-depth — a "Why
is this happening?"
ODE: Are you one of those people that gets pissed
off when we leave the crossword out?
Andy I don't look at the back — except for the
"Far Side" or "Calvin and Hobbes.” I don't read the
classifieds. I don't give a shit and I don't think most
[Hiople care — that's my opinion.
ODE: If you don't like the crossword, then what
kind of hobbies do you have?
Andy: 1 like to travel. I like to read ... I like guns
a lot. I've got five hand guns, a couple of assault
rifles, a couple of shotguns, a couple of hunting
rifles.
ODE: Want to take me out shooting some time?
Andy: Sure, any time. As long as you don't mind
chipping in for the ammo.
"Drinks with " is a regular feature in the Emer
ald this year Emerald Editor lake Berg will conduct
the question nnd-answer session with each "Drinks
