Despite being beaten soundly, the Ducks showed it are becoming a more competitive, more consistent team. The 15-12. 15-6. 15-11 defeat by USC may have provided a boost to the Ducks' confidence A night after being thumped 15 4. 15-7. 15-8 by the Bruins, Ore gon rebounded and showed the\ could pose a challenge to one of the l’a< ific-10 Conference's bet ter teams. The results were better Our offense was more effective. I don’t think we set the world on fire with our hitting stats, but it was I rotter," (Jregon coach (lerr\ Gregory said after the USC match. t'he Trojans were not able to dominate their match w ith Ore gon the way the Bruins had the night before. Gregory attributed the difference to improved play by Oregon and a weaker oppo nent. Oregon's hitting percentage for the USC match was .231, com pared to .344 for the Trojans The Ducks were led by quit k hitter Karissa Meith. whose 13 kills and .324 hitting percentage were game highs, and setter Kalie Kerr, who had 27 assists. "Kerr came in and solidified our right-side block,” Gregory said. During the USC mutch, the Ducks appeared to gain confi dence, avoiding the stretches of mistake-prone play that marred their loss to UCLA Against the Bruins, inconsistency was the downfall of a hustling, deter mined Duck team that was unable to stop UCLA's potent offense, led by outside hitter Annett Buckner. pp Karissa Meith tries tor a kill against UCLA Friday. Inconsistency has caused prob turns for an Oregon team that is young and is adjusting to a new offense, but (iregorv said (fregon will continue to improve "It's hard to lie consistent right now because our lineup has changed a lot just to meet the needs of what's going on out there." Gregory said. "I think i on sistenc s is something that feeds upon itself The more consistent we are, the better it will be lor everybody The Ducks' record dropped to 3-8 on the season and II 3 in the Puc-10 after the USC match Despite a four-match losing streak.
