There are also many opposo
tions and peace activists. There
are independent peace organi
zations like the Antiwar Cam
paign of Croatia (AWCC). Sun
cokret. women's lobby. Peace
Movement Ri)eka. Dalmatian
Committee of Solidarity and
Center for Peace. Non-violence
and Human Rights Osijek. In
Zagreb. 1 visited the AWCC and
auncokret. Awa was tounaea in /.agree in me
beginning of July 1991, committed to peace and
non-violence, development of democracy and pro
tection and promotion of human rights. Few local
organizations financially support AWCC because
of economic crisis, but many international orga
nizations contribute to them, especially from Ger
many and Austria. Coordinating with other peace
organizations, they have been working for educa
tion for non-violent conflict resolution, mediation
training of the refugees, establishment of civil ser
vice. humanitarian assistanc e, promotion of peace
policies, reconciliation of soldiers, and so forth.
They periodically publish a magazine called Arkzin
(both in Croatian and in English), criticizing the
government's policy and promoting human rights.
However, not many people are responding to them
in Croatia. While the government is becoming more
repressive, it's important to keep these indepen
dent organizations for creation of genuine democ
racy and civil society. They need more help from
outside countries, financially and morally.
People in Croatia are wondering why Croatia is
isolated and more lonely. Some of them hove real
