Shootyz Groove Is a band that no one wants to run Into In this alley
New York band hits
right groove on EP
Shootyz Groove, a new band
out of New York City, has a five
song EP out called Respect.
The members of this quintet
come from widely differing
backgrounds and this diversity
is reflected in the music they
produce. Melding elements of
rap/hip hop and metal, they
have created a unique sound.
Respect becomes increasingly
impressive each time played.
The members of the band
have some funky names: Sense
and Season vocalize the rhymes
for the band; on bass is a fella
named Spei . and Dose lays
down the bent on the drums
The man with the only regular
name. Donnv. shines on the gui
tar that gives the group its rock,
edge.
Despite their menacing
appearance. Shootyz Groove,
who do have some admirable,
solid grooves, profess peace.
Unlike a lot of rap groups (or
hard rock bands for that matter),
they do not glorify violence.
Shootyz Groove, who leaves
out any mention of guns in their
lyrics, can and do sling the dirty
words that art* prevalent in this
type of music. Profanity is gen
erously dispersed through the
street vocabulary of their songs.
In an interview in The Mighty
Decible recently. Donny. the
axe-man, summed up the band's
positive message.
"We feel that, in essence,
music has separated our society
somewhat between the races of
our youth” he told the maga
zine. “If the medium of music is
what broke down and separat
ed us. then if the five of us can
get together, coming from all
different walks of life, and cre
ate something great, then I think
music itself, the way we do it.
can break down those barriers."
Their music is an interesting
amalgam. Basically, they bring
metal guitars to rap music. Ice-T
did something similar with his
latest band. Body Count. Also,
Sense and Season, the two rap
pers in Shootyz Groove. work
well as a team, taking turns on
the mit: and trading lines fre
quently. One can really get a
feel for what this band would
sound like live on Respect
bei ause the atmosphere of a
i luh setting is captured
While this bond has worked
hard for its success, the group
also plays hard. Two of the five
songs on the EP are odes to
drugs, one favorite being the
legal drug Crazy Horse liquor.
"Rocking in the Wilderness" is
Shootyz Groove's song about
their experiences with it
Their other favorite drug is
marijuana In "Buddahful Day."
they advocate its legalization
"Buy it/roll it/lick it/smoke it,"
they sing Listening to this tune
reminds one of the public ser
vice announcement that goes
"Get high. Get stupid."
Despite Shootyz Groove's
apparent heavy use of these sub
stances. they don't seem to have
taken any toll: they rock/rap as
intensely as anyone and are
supposed to have a full-length
album out in Septemlier.
