Senate to confirm Lee to OSBHE
By Ed Carson
••‘far .'*»•* l -»-■ e,f
University student Bobby Lee
is s< heduled to be confirmed
this week by the Oregon Senate
Wednesday to a two-year posi
lion on the Oregon State Board
of Higher faint ation
las- who has been involved in
student government throughout
his college years, most rei ently
as ASUO president and briefly
as an Inc idental Fee Committee
member, said his past experi
ence should help him in his
new position
"Out of al! the students. I
probably have the longest record
ol putting on rallies and demon
stration against this OSSHh
Board." 1 ee said When (his
position opened up. I knew that
I r ould continue to influence the
hoard from within
Lee said his main goals will
be to ensure equal opportunity,
quality edu« ation and at i ess
Lee was appointed by (.ov
Barbara Roberts over several
other applicants for the vat am v
in early July Roberts also
appointed two non-students to
the state hoard at the same time
OSBIIK is i omposed of volun
leer members, two of whom are
students The board establishes
polices and guidelines and
reviews and approves budgets
for all eight state-supported col
leges and universities
Lee said most students are
probably not even aware that the
state board exists, something he
hopes to i hange.
"This board is invisible to stu
dents and yet ultimately this
board is responsible fur all the
universities and colleges in Ore
gon," l-ee said "It's in charge of
billions of dollars "
Another of Lee's goals as an
OSBHK member is to "put some
teeth' in the Oregon Adminis
trative Rules regarding sexual
harassment and other hate
i rimes He said ideally he
would like state rules on this
behavior to be as tough as the
l hmersiH 's own student i ode
"From sexual and rai iul
harassment to all kinds of hate
crimes, all of the state i olleges
and universities should have the
same rules.” Lee said.

dents to speak tor themselves."
Lee said.
If and when further higher
edu< alien budget cuts occur.
Lee said top administrators
should bear more of the burden
"If there's going to he a cut.
it's got to be from top to bot
tom." Lee said.
