Many of the 8.089 spectators had come to see Sergei Bubka, the world record-holder in the pole vault, compete for the first time in Eugene. Bubka won the event by clearing 19-2. and then he sent a stir through the crowd by asking officials to raise the bar to 20-1 3/4. a would-be world record. On his third attempt. Bubka got his torso over the standard, but his forearm graced the bar on his descent "I feel very bad. I was very close, and I feel 1 could have done better." Bubka said. "The last attempt was very close, and I'm upset about it. It just wasn't a good takeoff, but there's nothing I can do about it now." Two of the distance races, the steeplechase and the 5,000 meters, produced the fastest times in the world this season.
