Anyone who still believe* world-class track meets
happen exclusively on European soil didn't see the
Frefontaine Classic at Hayward Field Saturday night.
Many of the 8.089 spectators had come to see
Sergei Bubka, the world record-holder in the pole
vault, compete for the first time in Eugene. Bubka
won the event by clearing 19-2. and then he sent a
stir through the crowd by asking officials to raise
the bar to 20-1 3/4. a would-be world record.
On his third attempt. Bubka got his torso over the
standard, but his forearm graced the bar on his
descent
"I feel very bad. I was very close, and I feel 1 could
have done better." Bubka said. "The last attempt
was very close, and I'm upset about it. It just wasn't
a good takeoff, but there's nothing I can do about
it now."
Two of the distance races, the steeplechase and
the 5,000 meters, produced the fastest times in the
world this season.
Former Arizona runner Marc Davis waited until
the final stretch to pass former NCAA champion
Mark Croghan to record a 8:20.14 win in the steeple,
and Todd Williams, the lOth-place finisher in last
year's Olympic meet, ran by himself the last 3,000
