Ohio State
admits
NCAA
violations
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AF) —
Ohio State admitted Monday
that coach Randy Ayers and a
former assistant coach broke
NCAA rules in recruiting and
signing basketball star Damon
Flint But the university still
plans to appeal.
"We are embarrassed that this
kind of incident would happen
here," said Jim Jones. Ohio
State' athletic director.
Flint, a 6-foot-5 swingman
from Cincinnati Woodward
High School, signed a letter of
intent with the Buckeyes in
November. The NCAA ruled ho
was ineligible to attend Ohio
State, and ho reportedly is con
sidering Louisville, Cincinnati,
Nevada-Las Vegas, Arkansas
and Kentucky.
Jones said Ohio State was
appealing because a number of
the violations ore "unfair
charges.” The NCAA has r.ot
said whether Ohio Slate will be
penalized further
Jones said former Ohio State
assistant coach Paul Brazeau,
now the head coach at Hartford,
gave money to Flint's high
school coach, Jim Leon, to pay
for a meal. Jones also said
Brazeau gave four nylon training
bags to Flint and bis teammates.
In all. the NCAA found Ohio
State committed 17 violations.
Six stemmed from on Oct. 30,
1991, meeting between Flint,
then a junior, and Ohio State
coaches.
