Men golfers finish 15th
at regional tournament

The Oregon men's golf team
saw its season come to an abrupt
end Friday when it finished
15th at the West Regional in Pro
vo. Utah
The Ducks' three-round total
of 893 left them 11 shots away
from the ninth place slot they
needed to be in to advance to
nationals. The Ducks w«re in
contention for a top nine finish
after the first day when they
shot 293 and were in 12th place,
but only three shots out of third
place.
Oregon senior Jeff Lyons over
came illness to pace the team
with a 2-under-par 70 during the
first round Wednesday. Juniors
Randy McCracken and Jeremy
Forster added rounds of 73 and
74. respectively, during the
opening round
The Ducks dropped out of
contention when they shot 303
in the second round, the second
worst round any team shot dur
ing the tournament. The Ducks
found themselves 16th out of 18
teams after the second round,
and needed one of their best
rounds of the year in the final
round to qualify for nationals,
but it did not happen.
Forster led the Ducks with a
73 on Thursday, but no other
Ducks could shoot better than
76. and Oregon had to count two
77s in the five-man. count-four
format. The Ducks found them
selves seven shots behind ninth
place UCLA heading into the
final round but they could not
catch the Bruins.
Oregon shot 297 in the final
round, but moved up only one
spot to 15th place Sophomore

ev*n-par 72. to lead the Ducks in
the final round McCracken
added a 74 and senior Cam Mar
tin shot 75 on the final day for
the Ducks.
Lyons led the Ducks during
his final collegiate tournament,
finishing in 45th place at 223.
The top two finishers on non
qualifying teams also qualify for
the NCAA Championships next
month, but Lyons finished seven
shots behind Nevada's Robert
Walton, who nabbed the second
individual spot.
McCracken shot 224 for the
54-hole event and finished in a
tie for 55th place. Forster and
Suavely tied for 67th place at
227. followed by Martin at 231,
Arizona won the tournament
with a 5-under par 859. seven
shots better than in-state rival
Arizona State. Arizona senior
Manny Zerman won medalist
honors by shooting 5-under-par
211. three shot ahead of team
mate David Berganio. Fresno
State's )oe Acosta and Pepper
dine's Jeff Gove.
The Ducks lose two seniors off
this year’s team who combined
to win four college tournaments
in the last two years. Lyons won
two tournaments during the
spring of 1992. and was named
first team all-Pacific-10 Confer
ence and honorable mention
All-American last year. Lyons
led the Ducks in stroke average
this season and was selected
second team all-conference.
Martin, the reigning Oregon
Amateur champion, tied for first
place in back-to-back tourna
ments this spring.
