Thu Orison softball team took
advantage o( a break in the
weather Tuesday and swept
Oregon State at Howe Field.
The Ducks (17-13. 7-5) used a
hurst of power in the first game
to beat tin* Beavers 5-1. and then
they got timely hits in the night
cap on the way to shutting out
Oregon State 4-0.
Oregon catcher Laura Schmidt
put the Ducks on top in the first
game when she blasted a two
run home run over the right
field wall to give the Ducks a 2
0 lead. Schmidt's home run was
her seventh of the season, break
ing the previous Oregon record
of six in one season, which was
set by Kim Manning during the
1901 and 1992 seasons.
"Laura has been great on
offense and defense." Oregon
head coach Tumi Brown said.
"We have had 2fi rainouts, so
imagine what she could have
done in a complete season."
After Oregon State si ored a
run in the top of the second
inning. Oregon's Leanne Brooks
connected for her second home
run of the season in the bottom
of the inning to give Oregon a .1

an Rill singlo in the third inning
to boost Oregon’s load to 4-1
The Ducks led 1-0 heading
into the bottom of the third
inning in game two. hut they
quic kly raised the? lead with four
consecutive singles. Kim
Kampfer led off the inning with
a single. Ixifore Kathy Stahl and
I.isa Preston followed to load the
bases. Jennifer Piper singled to
left field to score Kampfer. and
Schmidt brought Stahl home on
a sac rifice fly to give Oregon a 3
0 lead.
Rachelle Taylor combined to
pitch 13 innings in the two
games and allowed only five
hits and one run to raise her sea
son record to 12-10.
"Rochelle has to remain
strong for us." Brown said "I
have confidence in our other
pitchers if we need them, hut I
expect Rac belle to get most of
the work during the? remainder
of the season."
The Ducks' final scheduled
games are this weekend on the
road against No. 1H Arizona
State Friday, followed by a game
against third-ranked Arizona
Saturday Brown said she is try
ing to schedule some home
games sometime during the next
week and a half
