As with dabbling in anything new, things got off to an erratic start
Some were slow to catch on. while the creativity in others caught
fire. But more importantly, everyone got the idea that it was OK not
to f»e self-conscious and that it was fine to exaggerate.
"It's like sliding down the water slide — the farther down the
slide, the more exhilarating.” Descutnor said
However, the play does not set out to emulate the Balinese
authentic ity. "It's difficult for one culture to fully capture the flavor
of another, so instead we want to draw the audience to a view of Bali
as seen through the American looking-glass." Descutner said.
Nevertheless, none of its visually-elaborate quality is spared in the
production. Lavish costumes, designed by Alexandra Bonds, associ
ate professor of theater arts, c ome in exotic: hand-loomed and hand
painted Balinese fabric s brought back from a research tour of
Indonesia last summer.
Furthermore, shimmering sets, invented by Williams, employ
thousands of crystal prisms with special lighting and effects. And.
under the direction of Robert Kyr of the School of Music, members
of the Pacific Rim Gamelan will compose an original score on their
Balinese orchestra of gongs and chimes.
Graduate student and playwright Lorilyn Jirges created the story
of Chimera, an enchantress who is kidnapped from her magical mist
by the evil sorcerer Singaraja. Harmony is restored to the world, and
the dawn comes to another day when she is rescued.
Chimera opens at Robinson Theater April Ti and continues
through May 1 Tickets are $4.50 for students.
