Ducks pass BYU,
win at Invitational
By Steve Mims
Emerald Sports Reporter
The Oregon men's golf team
shot a 4-over-par 202 to pass
Brigham Young aisci San Jose
State during the final round to
win the Duck Invitational at
Emerald Valley Golf Club Tues
day afternoon.
The Ducks wore in third
place, four strokes behind San
jose State after rtfi holes Monday
at Eugene Country Club, but the
Spartans shot 2‘.IH on the final
day to finish in a second place
tie with the BYU Cougars. The
win marked the first time in
three years the Ducks won their
home tournament.
"I am ecstatic," Oregon head
coach Steve Nosier said "The
kids put themselves in a posi
tion to win Monday and played
good today to get the win."
Oregon senior Jeff Lyons was
unable to defend the individual
title he won last year, but he led
the Ducks with a 5-over-par 221
and finished tied for fourth
Lyons recovered from a ?H in
Monday's second round with a
73 on Tuesday.
I leel like I play I'd terrible,
Lyons said. "I stuffed most of
my shots near the pin but
missed a lot of putts. I'm glad
the team played well, but I still
don't think we are where we
should be ”
Oregon's other senior. Cam
Martin, shot a 1-under-par 71 on
Tuesday including one stretch
when he hirdied four holes in a
row Martin began the tourna
ment with a 79 on Monday, hut
he came back with a 72 in the
second round and finished the
tournament in sixth place with a
222 total
"I was 4-under-par at one
time, so I am a little disappoint
ed with my score," Martin said.
"Considering I opened with a
79, I am pleased with how I
i a me back It could have been a
very disappointing tournament,
but 1 am happy with my last two
rounds.”
Paul Kttgali and Kandy
McCracken combined to shoot
23-over-par during the first two
rounds, hut they both shot 74 in
the final round to help the
Ducks to the victory. Sophomore
Ted Suavely was the only Duck
who struggled Tuesday, os he
shot a final round 77 to rmish at
226
Freshman Chris Bensel played
as an individual, and his scores
did not count toward the team
totals. He shot a final round 69
to finish tied with Lyons at 221.
Jeremy Forster also played as an
individual, and he shot 74 in the
final round to finish tied for
14th place at 225 Oregon's oth
er individual. Alex Nukajimu
shot 80 on Tuesday to finish at
336.
Nosier said he was excited
about the play of Bensel and
F'orster. and he feels their play
adds depth to Oregon's spring
roster.
“1 was happy to see Jeremy
and Chris play well,” Nosier

Brigham Young's Eric Rustand
shot a final-round 72 Tuesday to
win the Duck Invitational.
said "Those two will compete
with our other f;ve players for
spots in the spring tournaments.
We will take six players to throe
of our remaining tournaments,
so it is good to see them play
well."
Brigham Young junior Eric
Rostand continued his spectacu
lar play Tuesday with a final
round 72 to capture his first col
legiate victory. Rostand shot
rounds of 71 and 70 on Monday^
and finished the tournament at
2 IT six shots ahead of San lose
State's Steve Woods and Corby
Segal of C^al State Northridge.
"I think I play better on
tougher courses and the two
courses we played were diffi
cult." Rustand said. "I played
two practice rounds here under
par. hut 1 am surprised the oth
er players fell back."
Rustand was never threatened
Tuesday, as he shot even par on
the front nine holes, while
Woods, who trailifd by only two
shots entering the day. played
the front nine at 4-over-par. Rus
tand erased any doubt he would
win on the par-5 12th-ho!e
when he recovered from a had
tee shot and sunk a 12-foot putt
for eagle.
"1 knew 1 won the tournament
after I got the eagle on No. 12."
Rustand said “I hit a bad tee
shot so I just wanted to hit my
second shot as hard as I could,
and fortunately I got close to the
hole."
Brigham Young head coach
Bruce Brockhank said he hoped
Rostand's victory would end the
junior's slump
“Me got the season off to a
shaky start." Brockhank said.
"He didn't play very well in the
fall. This win for him is super;
he is a very pleasant young
man."
The Ducks play next in the
Pacific Coast Invitational in San
ta Barbara March 24-25, and
Nosier said he hopes Tuesday's
victory will be the beginning of
a good spring season.
"The ability to win is here,"
Nosier said. "You have to start
somewhere, so this is a real
important finish.”
