    Men third after first two rounds

The Oregon men's golf teem overcame tough
conditions and inconsistent play to move into
third plat* heading for the final round of the Duck
Invitational at Kmorald Valley Golf Club today.
The Ducks shot a two-round total of 601 during
the first day of competition Monday at Eugene
Country Club, placing them four shots behind
defending champion San Jose State and three shots
behind Brigham Young. USC and Washington are
close behind the Ducks with scores of 803 anti 606.
respectively, with Long Beach State and Boise
State at 608.
"I am glad we're still in it." Oregon head coat h
Steve Nosier said. "We are within striking dis
tant*. but we must play better to win."
Oregon senior Jeff Lyons got the Ducks ofl to a
quick start by shooting an opening-round 70.
putting him in a three-way tie for first place ufter
the first round. Lyons struggled through the sec
ond round on his way to a 7H. including one
stretch which saw him go six-over-par for five
holes midway through the round. Lyons is in sev
enth place at four-over-par HH, seven shots behind
tournament leader Erie Rostand of Brigham
Young.
Oregon's Ted Suavely improved oil an opening
round 75 with a 74 in the second round to put him
m .1 ln> for eighth place Suavely had troubles off
file tee all day but kept his st ores low thanks to a
good short game.
"I hit my driver awful and tnv short game was
oil and off." Suavely said ' I have to hit the hall

.Senior Cam Martin rei overvd from a disastrous
opening-round 79 with an even-par 7,2 in the sei
ond round Martin is a member of F.ugene (Country
Club and has played it for years, hut he said the
course was set up as tough as he had ever seen it
"The tees were pushed back and the course
played soft." Martin said. "The wind ini reasetl m
the second round and that also made the course
tougher The first round I was hitting the hall
everywhere, but I tiegan to bit greens in the after
noon.”
Sophomore Paul Regall finished the dav at IVI
after shooting a 7fi in the first round followed bv
a 77 in the afternoon Junior Randy McCracken
shot hack-to-hai k 79s to finish at lr)H
The tournament concludes with IM holes at
Kmerald Valley Coif Club beginning at H 1 r> a m
today Nosier says he does not evpei I any differ
ence in the scores despite the change of courses
"The country club played difficult today. so I
don't think scores were that high." Nosier said
"Fmerald Valley is ptst as difficult, so 1 think the
scores will lx* comparable "
