ASU overpowers Ducks 77-63

Arizona Slate's inside game
was loo much for the Oregon
women's basketball team on
Thursday night, as the Sun Dev
ils defeated the Ducks 77-63 at
McArthur Court
Arizona State's front line
combined to score 43 points and
grab 28 rebounds, compared to
33 points and nine rebounds for
the Ducks front line. Forward
Monique Ambers led the Sun
Devils with 20 points, followed
by Jovonne Smith with 16
points. Arizona State's center
I.isa Salsman pulled down 11
rebounds, while Ambers and
Smith had nine and eight
rebounds, respectively.

fered in the first half when Deb
bie Sport ich picked up two
fouls in the first five minutes
and finished the half with no
points and one rebound. Sporci
ch came on strong in the second
half, scoring 19 points to lead
the Ducks. Missy Slowell was
the only other Duck who scored
in double figures, as she fin
ished with 12 points.
The Sun Devils opened the
game with a 9-2 run and they
did not relinouish it all night.
Arizona State led by as many as
12 points in the opening half,
before the Ducks cut the lead to
30-26 with 2:02 remaining in the

half with a 6-0 run to take a 36

double digits for most of the sec
ond half until Sporcioh cut the
lead to 67-58 with 3:23 remain
ing in the game. The Sun Devils
did not panic, hut instead
responded with a 10-5 run to
end the game.
"We weren't as sharp as we
needed to bo. said Oregon head
coach Elwin Homy who picked
up a rare technical foul in the
first half. "Arizona State's inside
game really took over Their
post players picked it up a notch
in the second half: they did the
things that hurt us."
The Ducks will host their final
home game Saturday night
when they face Arizona at 5:30
Winning streak short-lived for men
The men's basketball team saw its two-game
winning streak come to a halt at the hands of Ari
zona State Thursday, losing 103-88 in Tempts
The Ducks trimmed a 16-point halftime deficit
to seven with a nine-point run to open the second
half. But the Sun Devils scored 15 in a row to go
back up 05-43.
Oregon got within 10 with two minutes left, but
it wasn’t enough
Oregon trailed by only si* at 30-24 midway
through the first half, but Arizona State went on a
9-2 run to take a 13-point lead.
