Clinton to estimate deficit for ‘97 WASHINGTON (AP) • President Clinton will declare tonight that, obsent nnv action, the federal deficit four years from now will be $41 bil lion worse than tin* gloomiest Hush administration projection, a senior White House official said 1 uesday That means that Clinton will have to propose higher loses and deeper spending t uts than envisioned a few weeks ago to meet his deficits titling goal The official said Clinton will use a fiscal 1997 budget projection of $146 billion — compared to the $305 bil lion that the outgoing Hush administration estimated in january. President Hush's figure was already greatly larger than the $188 billion his administration had projected a year earlier Clinton has said that worsening defit it projw lions are the reason he had to abandon Ins < ampaign promise of a middle-class tax cut and go instead with a package of higher taxes that aides say will affect every Amiiru an making $30,OIK) or more Clinton is not only raising the budget deficit above the Hush administration figure for 1997, tint also far above the Congressional Itudget (Iff it e’s estimate of $310 Hi I - lion.
