Local benefit for Somalia planned
The l-ane County chapter of the Red
Cross has teamed up with several Universi
ty groups for a benefit show and auction
tiiis Sunday to help Red Cross efforts in So
malia.
Margaret Barnes, local director of finan
cial development, said there has been a sub
stantial interest in contributing to the relief
efforts since the famine in Somalia began
making headlines.
"People started calling us and asking
what they could do to help," Barnes said
The Red Cross eventually c ontacted Peter
Briggs, associate director of international
education and exchange at the University,
who helped organize student and adminis
trative involvement.
The henofit is Sunday from 1-7 p m in
Agate Hall at the comer of lHth Avenue and
Agate Street. Admission is $4 per person
and Sit) |a*r family. Tic kets are available at
the Red Cross office at 150 K lHth Ave .

Barries said the money earned will go di
rectly to Somalia to help Rod Cross feeding
center* and hospitals and help fund a seed
program to assist Somalians in growing
food.

music at 5:45.
Ethnic food, a raffle and an auction of
several donated gifts, will also be featured
Barnes said those who attend can arrive
any time and return without extra charge if
they leave.
Student groups such as the Blac.k Student
Union. African Students Association and
International Students Association are co
sponsors. as well as administrative offices
such as the Office of International Affairs,
the International Cultural Service Program,
the Office of International Education and
Exc hange and the Dean of Students Office.
Sister city family program begins
Families eager to make friends in Russia
c an meet other families through the 'l ink
a-Eamilv" program created by the Eugene
Irkutsk Sister City Committee
Although residents of l>oth cities part it i
pate in pen pal program*, this is the first
formal effort to link families in Eugene and
Irkutsk, said Mary Wright McIntosh. Sister
Cities Administrator.
"There are people in Irkutsk who have
wanted to do this, as well as hi Eugene."
said McIntosh, adding that she exjiects the
program to he successful
"There's still a certain mystique about
Russia," she said “It's the country people
are most interested in.”
Applications for the program are avail
able at the Eugene Public: Library and the
Rim reatiun atui Cultural Servic es office at
22 West Seventh Ave.
Substance abuse program set
The University's Substance Abuse Pre
vention Program will present a two-day
conference this weekend at Valley River
Center to provide information on kids and
the link between drugs and self-esteem.
The seminar is designed to give informa
tion on prevention, support and general
awareness about drugs, self-esteem and the
elfiM ts of drugs on children in the commu
nity.

"The reason for no parking on
the south side and new bike
lanes is to separate the car traffic
and bike traffic for safety con
cerns." Levinski said.
In addition, the regulations
will reduce the number of "bicy
cle-car conflicts" on 13th
Avenue that result from unreg
ulated. drive-through traffic on
that street, she said.
The final additions needed to
complete the project include
some electrical work in the
booth, and painting in areas to
park and now bicycle lanes.
The project was originally bud
geted at $43,()()(), with the mon
ey coming from OPS revenue
generated through parking tick
ets and a bicycle improvement
fund.
