A ric h variety of dances from the rhythmically
complex ethnic dances of Bulgaria to the metaphorical
dances of animals in the wild ■ will be presented m
'Wings On Your Heeds," opening lanuary 15 in the
Robinson Theatre
The dance department will present this 12nd annual
Department of Dance faculty dance concert in coniurn
lion with the theatre arts program, which provides cos
tume and set design, technical direc tion and theater
space to complement the five indiv uInal choreographed
pieces
Susan Zadol'f, senior instructor of dance, composed
“Silenced" as a timely piec e' related to the Anne Trank
exhibit
Zadoff wanted to he involved in the Anne Trank
exhibit currently showing in Tugene, but realized the
“Wings On Your Heels" show was opening around the
same time, she said.
"I wanted to be connected I he silencing of (Frank s)
voice represents six million voices silenced," she said
Tor this reason, her piece has an underlying theme that
is political.
She said she began to see the structured, organi/a
tional murdering of the Holocaust as parallel to other
forms of oppression
"I began to see book banning, which is an attempt to
suppress ideas, as parallel to the silencing of people."
she said.
To convey the “silencing of voices." ZadofTs dancers
speak small excerpts from various banned books, such
as the works of John Steinbec k. Henry 1) I bureau and
Anne Trank
This theatrical aspect, or scenario, that the story of
Anne Trank inspired is not typic al of her cheorogr.iphy.
she said. But she said she felt Anne Frank's message of
the resiliency of the human spirit, or its ability to over
come oppression, was a message she wantcxl to portray
through dance
Lisa Arkin. an assistant professor of dance, choreo
graphed "Bulgarska Kitka Bulgarian Bouquet." which
features eight women wearing traditional clothing
designs from indigenous people of Bulgaria's Shope
Mountains
