Bruins hope to play spoiler against Ducks
By Sieve Mims
Erne-aid Sports Reporter
Don't expect Oregon to watch
too many game films of UCLA this
week, the Ducks spent all of last
year watching them
The it M2 UCLA and 1991 Oregon
football teams are two very simi
lar teams Last year the Ducks were
coming off of two straight years
playing in a howl game and were
optimistic about a third year before
injuries depleted their offensive
backfield. Danny O'Neil was injured
early in the year and the Ducks
played five different quarterbacks
before the year ended
This season, the Bruins were
coming off a 9-3 season capped off
with a victory in the John Hancock
Bowl and were looking at a possi
ble game on New Year's Day
Tommy Maddox, their projected
starter at quarterback, is now
throwing passes for the Denver
Broncos, and UCLA has had to
play four quarterbacks this year.
"The two teams are similar,
especially at quarterback," Oregon
head coach Rich Brooks said
"Maybe now people in Southern
California can appreciate the
importance of an experienced
quarterback One of the most diffi
cult things to do in football is
switch quarterbacks "
Don’t expect Oregon to be over
confident or sympathetic against
the Bruins. Iiecause the Ducks know
they need to win both of their final
games if they want to have any
chant e of a bowl invitation. How
ever, Brooks said talk about post
season play is premature.
"We are not alive if we lose.”

Brooks said. "Wo knew after the
bye week we needed to win all
four games if we were to play in a
bowl, and so far we have won two
of them. If we lose this weekend, it
will take more than a tourniquet to
stop the bleeding.”
UCLA may not look like
opponent, hut its defense i
the best in the country. The defense
is led by senior defensive end Mike
Chalenski, junior nose guard Bruce
Walker and an outstanding sec
ondary spearheaded by Carlton
Gray and Othello Henderson
"UCLA's defense is solid.”
Brooks said. "They are good up
5 one of
front and can really control the line
of scrimmage. Walker is a force at
nose guard, and Chalenski is play
ing outstanding football. Their sec
ondary is talented and fast, and
overall, their defense is the 14th twist
4, nation."
* running back Kicky Whit
tle ran for 129 yards last Saturday,
but he hasn't practiced at all this
week because of an ankle injury.
With Whittle questionable and the
season-ending injury to receiver
Derrick Deadwiler two weeks ago.
Brooks had to shuffle the offense
It is tough when you lose your
leading receiver,” Brooks said. "I
r
ft-it we had to spread the ball
around. We have done a gotxl job of
getting the ball to our backs and
tight ends, and Ronnie Harris and
Anthony Jones are playing a bigger
role.”
UCLA, 4-5 overall anti 1-4 in the
conference, has a rich tradition of
football and is still aiming for a win
ning season.
"If we can muster enough good
play, we certainly have a chance to
have a winning season, which
would be great," UCLA coach Ter
ry Donahue said. “We certainly
