MISTAKES
Continued from Page 2B
heavily favored Cardinal The
Ducks drove down inside Stan
ford’s 20-yard line, but O'Neil
threw an interception in the end
zone The Cardinal took advan
tage of the turnover, scoring on
the ensuing drive. The 14-point
swing was the difference in Ore
gon’s 21-7 loss
Against Washington, the

No. 1 -ranked Huskies Oregon
trailed 17-0 in the third quarter
but were gaining momentum as
they tried to close the gap on
Washington The Ducks got to the
Husky 10-yard line, but O'Neil
was again picked off in the end
zone As was the case against
Stanford. Washington ( ashed in
twofold on the interception, scor
ing a touchdown on the ensuing
drive Another 14-point swing.
and another Oregon loss
Making turnovers are not the
only time the Ducks have point
ed a gun toward their feet and
pulled the trigger Special teams
play is just as responsible for two
of Oregon's losses
The Huskies were able to turn
a potentially flimsy 7-0 halftone
load into a 17-0 lead that was
spurred by a blocked punt in Ore
gon territory Washington was
able to score 10 points in two
minutes to end the half From
there, the Ducks were in an uphill
liattle
Out that special teams mistake
pales in comparison to the way
the special teams played against
use;
A fumbled kickoff, two mas
sive Trojan punt returns, an Ore
gon punt snapped out of the end
zone and a Duck fumble on a
punt return translated into a 2f>
7 first-half lead for the Trojans. If
the special teams' mistakes were
deleted from that gam**, Oregon
would have won 10-6 Instead,
the L)ur:ks were buried .12-50
Oregon has turned the hi) 11 over
22 times in eight games, and its
opponents have committed 17
turnovers The difference has
been when and where the Ducks
have lost the ball
Ifs. shouIds, woulds and could*
are all part of the game But con
sider this. If the points Oregon's
opponents have scored off of
Duck mistakes are taken off and
the points Oregon should have
stored in their losses are added,
the Ducks would have won three
of those games and could have
been 7-5 at this point
But Brooks is not as worried as
much about the past as he is the
future
"We can't look back at what
could've been." he said. "We
have to regroup and salvage
what we have left."
