Golf team struggles in Seattle By Steve Mims Emerald Sports Reporter The Oregon men's golf toam struggled In Its first tournament of the season, finishing ninth at the Husky Classic in Seattle on Tuesday. The Ducks were in fifth place nftnr posting a 208 in the firsi round, but disaster struck dur ing Monday’s second round The Ducks fired a 34-ovnr-par, 314, the worst one-round toam score of the tournament. Ore gon rebounded by posting a 287 on Tuesday, the third-best total for the round. Individually the Ducks were led by senior Joff Lyons with a 10-ovcr-par 220. giving him a tie for 14lh place. Lyons' play was typical of the Ducks, shoot In# >i combined one-over dur ing the first and last rounds, and a 79 In the second round, killing hls chances of winning the tournament. Lyons finished the tournament with a 69, the fourth-best round of the day Cam Martin, a senior who rodshirted last year, finished in a tie for 22nd, three shots be hind Lyons The University of Southern California won the team title with a final round of 287 for an overall score of 872 on the pur 70 Broadmcxir Country Club in Seattle. Steve Burdick of Stanford won the individual title with a 213. Including a final round of 68, which llod the lowest score of the tournament Oregon finished last of the seven Pacific-10 Conference ieams in the field Besides the Durks, Stanford and USC. other conference teams at tint tourna ment were Washington State, Oregon State and two teams frem the host school.
