Brooks said his main concerns center around
student-athletes and, of course, Measure 5, which
has thrown the athletic, department and the Uni
versity as a whole for a loop.
"My No 1 goal is to make the student-athlete's
experience a positive one." Brooks said "I think
for the most part, it has been, and I don't want
that to change
"Obviously. Measure 5 is also a concern If the
state of Oregon can't keep tuition at an affordable
level, there's going to lie a lot of students in the
slate who aren't going to la* able to afford to stay
in state "
With Autzen Stadium and Hayward Field
recently receiving facelifts. Brooks said McArthur
Qrurt — the ancient, ivy-covemd Iwisketliall court
— will be next in line.
"We have to address the situation at Mac
Court,” Brooks said, "Obviously, it's not going to
get done overnight, but it needs to be addressed."
Brooks' contract runs through July 1, 1994, and
he will have an extra S20.000 a year tacked on to
the S97.859 annual salary he earns as a coach
Byrne earned $88,000 a year at Oregon, so
Brrxiks is actually taking a pay cut in his new job.
Brooks said he didn't give the much lower salary
a second thought.
"In my mind, the financial issue is not an
issue." Brooks said. "We need to he innovative
and save money in areas that won't affect teams

Brooks realizes following in Byrne’s footsteps

"Bill Byrne has done a remarkable job, and
in that respect, he's going to be a bard man to fol
low." he said "I hope people will be a little
patient I don't expect not to get some criticism,
but hopefully we can gel enough people pulling
in the same direction and get some good things
