Fall season starts for golf squads

The Oregon men's and wom
en's golf teams are preparing to
begin their seasons with four
tournaments em it during the
fall season
The men welcome a new
couch this season. Steve Nosier,
a former member of ihe Oregon
Golf Association executive
c ommittee
"1 wasn't hired for my golfing
ability." said Nosier, who
playtsi freshman Rolf at Oregon
in 1955. "I have to do a lot of
things to make sure the players
have equipment and services
available to improve their
game."
Oregon lost four seniors to
graduation hut weicomod hack
six players from last year's
squad. Senior Jeff Lyons, an
honorable mention All-Ameri
can last season, heads the list of
returnees on a team that will be
deep but young
Doug DuChateuu, an honor
able monitor) aII-Pac-10 selec
tion, returns for the fall soason
to give the Ducks an added
weapon. Junior Kandy Mc
Cracken will return after walk
ing on lust season and contrib
uting during the spring.
Three players who redshirted
last year are back, including se
nior Cam Martin, whoso game
appears to be peaking after win
ning tho Oregon Amateur this
summer.
Sophomores Ted Snavely
and Paul Kegali also return af
ter taking off the 1991-92 sea
son.
Six newcomers will join the
team this year, including two
transfers expected to contribute
right away. Junior Jeremy For
ster from Columbia Basin in
Washington and Chris Bensol
from Miami are the most high
ly-touted of tho newcomers.
Bensel, a native of Bellingham,
Wash., played at Miami (Fla.)
but transferred when it
dropped its golf program.
Other additions to tho pro
gram are Ronn Miyashiro from
Hawaii, Bryce Ferrell and Kan
dy Freedman from Canada, and
Joel Slock from Sweet Homo.
Oregon plays its first of four
fall tournaments on October 5
and 6 at the Husky Classic in
Seattle.
The Oregon women began
their season early with a six
day trip to Japan that included
a match against Keio University
in Tokyo.
Tho Ducks and coach Ronoe
Baumgartner bring back eight
players from last year’s team,
which finishod the season
ranked 24th in tho nation by
Golfstat, Inc.
Senior Shannon Maier heads
the list of returnees to a young
Duck squad. Maier and junior
Amy Eileff have been elected
co-captains for the season and
will be expected to provide
leadership and strong piav.
I ne two other seniors on this
year's team are Anna Planalto
and Stacy Jo Smith. Smith, a
native of Grants Pass, trans
ferred to Oregon for her final
year.
Juniors Cappy Mack and
Leigh Casey are back after
redshirting the 1991-92 season.
Mack, who is the sister of
Baumgartner, will play her first
year for Oregon after transfer
ring from Notre Dame.
Sophomore* Karly Mills and
Shannon Haro are back after
sensational freshman seasons
in 1991-92 Sophomore Becca
Giersdorf also returns for the
Ducks.
Baumgartner said five fresh
men have a chance to muke the
team this year, including Heidi
Jane Booth, Susie Roh. Linily
Snyder, Christo! Tormeli and
Loanno Wong.
The Ducks began their fall
season finishing fourth in the
Duck Invitational last week.
Shannon Maier lot! the Ducks,
placing sixth with a 13-over-par
231, one stroke better than
teammate Leigh Casey. Tomori
was the Ducks' most impressive
newcomer, firing a 17-over-par
235.
The throe teams that finished
ahead of the Ducks are ali
ranked in the top 20 including
sixth-rankod UCLA, which won
the tournament. Seventh
ranked Arizona State finished
second, and No. 14 USC was
third of the Ducks. The only
other ranked team in the tour
nament, No. 20 Washington.
