Councilman credits God with renewal

"pagan nation"
SPKINCKIELD (AIM — A city
councilman who is leading a
fight against gay rights said be

tian revived his political ambi
tions.
Half Walters was the driving
force behind Springfield's now
anti-gay rights charter amend
ment, modeled after Moasuro 9,
the proposed statewide anti-gay
rights initiative sponsored by
the conservative Oregon Citi
zens Alliance.
His critics say Wulters is us
ing the issue to build support
for a fundamentalist movement
he hopes will sweep Oregon
polilics and advance his career.
“It's real clear this is part of a
long-term agenda that Waltors
has — not only to change
Springfield but also the whole
state,” said Scott Seibert, who
campaigned against the city or
dinance as spokesman for the
Oregonians United Together
Political Action Committee.
Waiters says he won't com
promise on moral issues such
as homosexuality and abortion.
"My personal agenda is the
same as the founding fathers,"
he said. "I'm not a lone voice
in the wilderness. I foel that if
them's a cultural war going on
in this nation, then Springfield
is on the front lines.''
Walters, 44, was appointed to
the City Council and faces two
opponents In the Nov. 3 gener
al election.
In ltWO, Republican Party of
ficials recruited Walters to run
against state Sen. Larry Hill in a
district held by Democrats for
more than 20 years.
Walters ran on an anti-abor
tion platform and supported
the Measure 5 property tax lim
it and lost badly in the Novem
ber election.
Two months later, he applied
for the City Council appoint
ment.
In his tenure there, ho has
formed a conservative majority
bloc with Larry Schanz and
George Wojcik The trio have
battled against Mayor Bill
Morrisetle and more liberal
council members.
"There is a fear that we are
crossing the line from a God
fearing nation to a pagan na
tion," he said. "Abortion, sexu
al immorality — people see
these as sign posts, and I think
we have crossed that line."
