The violence at the Federal
Building followed a rally in the
EMU Courtyard where students
expressed outrage over the not
guilty verdicts of the policemen
accused in connection with the
much-publicized videotaped
beating of King.
The rally moved to the led -
end Building, where protesters
did S6.131 worth of damage by
breaking J5 windows and two
doors.
Hoop, a student senator, was
arrested oulstdo a Senate moot
ing May 13 by Eugene police.
Arias turned himself in at the
federal courthouse the next
day.
Hoop was originally denied
bail aftur prosecutor Deborah
Doaly-Browning, an assistant
U S attorney, presented Feder
al Magistrate Tom Coffin an ar
ticle in the March issue of the
Oregon Voice that attributed
Hoop with saying after gradua
tion he would “probably get in
volved with a political group
and blow up buildings "
Coffin released Hoop May 14

not-guilty pleas.

tion by tho Eugene office of tho
FBI. Mehretab was Indicted
June 11 und turned himself in

day.
Videotaped footage of the
April 30 protest at the federal
Building was broadcast on two
local television stations, and a
photograph of Hoop kicking in
a window during the rally ap
peared on the front page of The
Register-Guard. Ray said the
videotape and photo probably
would have been used against
Hoop and Arias if tho caso had
gone to trial.
In a prepared statement, the
U.S. Attorney's office said tho
FBI is continuing its investiga
tion into ‘‘the other individuals
causing damage to the Federal
Building during tho April 30
demonstration."
