Continued from Page 2D
"Usually wo don't havo our

said High Street brower Stovo
van Rosaen. "Thoy're designed
to bo brewed and served fresh.”

debuted a spicy. Jolapcno beer.

"I like to think that with such
a small, cottage industry the
competition is friendly compe

nothing but the greatest respect
for the other microbreweries.
We appreciate their beers as
well as ours."

Jeff P a s s e r o 11 i said tho
brewpub’s fur off-campus loca
tion and mellow setting attracts
a different, somewhat older
crowd than High Street or East
19th S tree t.
The brewpub’s distinctive
beer has also set It apart.
"Our beers tond to be more
robust," Pusserolli said. "They
have a bigger body and a higher
alcohol content. We're into big,
full-bodied beers."
Steelhcad browmastcr Tori
Fahrendorf said she brows
beers according to her personal
tastes. She likes beers you can
chew on.
"We make big beers hero,”
Fahrendorf said. "It accents the
difference between our beers
and what's standardly avail
able.''
Fahrendorf refers to her light
est freer, McKenzie Light, as the
browpub's "training wheels."
People generally start out with
the light beer, but once they be
come familiar with the selec
tions, they often switch to the
darker boors.
"That's part of the whole fun
of coming here," Passorotti
said. "They like to come here
to learn uboul beers.”
The brewpub oases tho learn
ing process by offering a sam
pler of five of ils regular beers.
They aro arranged from light to
dark on a strip of paper that de
scribes euch beer.
"Wo do a lot of steering for
people." Passerotti said "But
actually, poople who don't like
boors usually end up liking our
darker boers."
Although Steclhoad beer is
only available through the Eu
gene location, poople can buy
40-ounco bottles and kegs to
take home.
Steelhoad's stout and amber
beurs won gold medals last year
at the Groat American Brewers
Fostival in Denver, Colo. All
major-label beers were entered
In the event and competed In
separate categories. After all, it
would hardly be fair to sample
a Budweiser alongside a
microbrew.
"There's nothing wrong with
a Budweiser. if that’s what you
like to drink." Passerotti said.
"Were just fortunate to havo
the choice in Oregon."
