first public shows

a full schedule of
public performances

The Lane Education Service
District Planetarium has been
about as visible as the Dig Dip
per at high nrxm since it was
built in 1979
Until last November, the fa
cility, which is located by Aut
zon Stadium, was used exclu
sively as a tool to teach Lane
County students about celestial
wonders. Meanwhile, planetar i
ums like OMS1 were packing in
stargazers and space cadets
with a mix of hard rock laser
shows and educational pro
grams.
However, with a change in
an Oregon statute last Novem
ber, the planetarium is begin
ning to offer a full sluto of pro
grams aimed directly at the
public. The amended statute
lots the facility raise public
money to run public shows.

El vert said the statute change
will allow the facility to ex
pand its role in the community
"Once the word gets
around,” Elvnrl said, "the com
munity will see us us a real re
source. Right now it's an under
used resource.''
