When the 21-yoar-old student
first walked into the towering
Campbell Club on Alder slroet.
he found more than just shelter.
He found a community.
And it is that sense of com
munity that has kept political
science major John Flanory liv
ing in the Campbell Club, locat
ed at 1670 Alder.
"This is a community for
both sexes," Flanory said.
"This is a place for people who
are willing to take responsibili
ty for their lives, and at the
same time roly on other peo
ple.'*
Flanery said much of life to
day lacks community, which
ho thinks is an important part
of being human.
“So much of society is alien
ating — living alone in an
apartment, going to your job
day after day. What sort of life
is that? What are you here for?"
Flanery lives with approxi
mately 34 other students In the
27-room Campbell Club, and
shares in the duties of main
taining the house.
All residents have their own
personal responsibilities,
which can range from cleaning
and cooking, to planning the
budget or tending the garden.
Each duty has an amount of
points assigned, which are ac
cumulated during the week un
til a certain amount is reached
Flanery said the duties usuully
average up to an hour u day.
Besides doing their weekly
duties, the inhabitants also
meet weekly to vote and rule
on events from upcoming
ovents to house policies, such
as their new plan to muke the
house handicapped-accessible
