chestra is an ornately decorated

nese music. The orchestra (for
molly named G a melon

for unusual chords and a dis
tinct brittle sound. The instru
ments include gongs, cymbals,
bolls, drums and metal bars.
Kyr calls is a feast for the
senses and Warren said the
people involved ensure a spec
tacular show.
"Knowing how talented (Wil
liams, Kyr and Descutnor) are. I
am sure they will not only give
a spectacular feast for tho eyes,
but they will probably bring the
scents of Balinese and Indone
sian spices to the theater," War
ren said.
After Chimera get ready to
shed a few tears for King Lour.
Shakespeare’s tragic master
piece will be directed by Bar

monarch und his throe daugh

dom using pride rather than
common sonso to create the
boundaries of three separate
kingdoms for each daughter.
Battles and storms rage across
the stage as King Lear loses all
that he holds dear.
Robinson Theatre is run by
the Department of Theater Arts
which is commencing its first
year. Previously the Theater
and Speech Departments were
combined into one department.
During the widespread cut
backs in the humanities last
year, the speech department
was eliminated and theater arts
was set up as a Department of
the School of Arts und Sci
ences.
"The creation of tho Depart
ment of '[fiouter Arts is a mixed
blessing." Barton said. "We are
now a very small, but very visi
ble Department."
The Department offers the
BA. M A.. M S . M I A . and
Ph D Degrees. Theater arts de
gree candidates from within the
school figure prominently in
theater operations. Because of
the involvement of many grad
uate students. Robinson
Theatre is able to put on higher
quality and challenging per
formances.
“Wo have a lot more mature
talent because of the graduate
students,” Barton said.
Students from outside the de
partment uro also encouraged
to participate in all aspects of
theater production Many op
portunities are available, in
cluding: set production and de
sign, technical assistants), con
struction, costumes, acting, as
sistant directing, publicity und
ushering.
Many students who are oth
erwise uninterested in the thea
ter production apply for the po
sition of usher in order to at
tend the performances for free.
The performance selections
are decided in early spring by a
forum of faculty and students.
The forum makes use of formal
proposals os well as informal
brainstorming.
Robinson Theatre Is funded
sololy on box office revenue.
The ASUO partially subsidizes
student ticket prices. Warren
has been the University Theater
business manager for nine
months und asserts that the fi
nancial side of the theater is
"stabilized and in the black."
Anyone wishing to get In
volved in the Department of
Theater Arts either as a student
or as a volunteer for Robinson
