Feasts for the eyes
abound around town

As an escape from the rain
and books, Eugene's museums
and gailorios offer a cultural re
treat ranging from tow skin fur
nituro to Japanese bombers to
galactic disasters. The follow
ing is a list of some local muse
ums and galleries and their cur
rent exhibits.
University Art Museum—
The museum is located on
the main lawn near the Knight
library and has one of tho most
extensive Asian art collections
on the West coast. In addition
to the Asian art and tho Kodin
sculptures on loan from Stan
ford University, the museum
features 90 works by 59 Oregon
artists in the "Oregon Biennia!
1991" traveling exhibit. Throe
of the pieces in tho oxhibit
were chosen for Jurors' prizes,
including University Fine Arts
Professor Margarot Prentice's
etching titlod "Primal Time."
Tho museum is open Wednes
day through Sunday from 12-5.

ral History
Located at the comer of 15th
Avenue and Agate Street and
daunting a large Chinook salm
on on Its facade, the museum
focuses on archaeology, natural
history, and cultural anthropol
ogy
“500 Yeurs of Resistance;
Threads of Continuity In Guate
mala and Mexico" is an exten
sive seven-month exhibit that
began Sept, 16.
Four exhibits, ha ul and inter
national guest speakers, per
formances. celebrations, work
shops. und a planetarium show
celebrate the traditions of Latin
America. The project explores
the varying levels of cultural re
sistance to foreign domination
by Nahu and Maya Indians
The series of exhibits are
“Threads of Continuity.
Threads of Change: Costumes
as Communication in Highland
Guatemala"; " Death and Fies
ta: Day of the Dead in Oaxaca.
Mexico"; and ‘‘The Color of
Tradition: Indigenous Women
of Moxico and Guatemala." Tho
museum is open Wednesday
through Sunday from 12-5.
Laverne Krause Gallery—
Located on tho first flexor of
Lawronco Holl. the campus art
gallery provides un opportunity
for students to show their
works. Tho exhibits rotate oneo
a week and early this fall, the
gallery will feature artwork by
the faculty and studonts. Call

Jacob's Gallery—
The gallery is on the ground
floor of tho Hull Center for the
Performing Arts and will be
open late on weekends for the
Mayor's Art Show exhibit until
