Emerald Sports Ed-'or
Oregon volleyball coach Ger
ry Gregory Isn't promising any
thing of his young group this
year.
With three starters and five
players overall gone front last
year's team that finished 14-16
and ninth tn the Pacific 10 Con
ference, Gregory knows this
could he a difficult year.
"I see this team having a few
ups and downs," Gregory said,
"1 also see this team having
some very exciting matches
and surprising some teams."
The problem with the Ducks
is not a lack of tulunt, but rather
a lack of experience. Nino of
the 13 members on Oregon's
roster are either freshman or
sophomores.
"The big question mark will
be how the younger players re
spond," Gregory said. "Physi
cally, I believe we're more tal
ented than last year's team. But
we're young and inexperi
enced.”
The most notable loss from
last year's loam is all-confor
cnce selection Dawnn Charroin.
Charroin led the Ducks in kills,
digs and blocks for the 1991
season, and replacing those
stats is going to tako more than
just ono player.
"We're going to divide up the
offense this year," Gregory
said. "Wo won't have a domi
nant hitter like Dawnn. but 1
think dividing things up will
give us gocxi balance."
Transfer Anne Qmway from
Illinois will be one addition to
Oregon's roster that will help
fill the void left by Charroin.
Conway will likoly start at mid
dle blocker or outside hitter.
She s a very versatile attack
er. u good blocker and sho does
a lot of things similar to what
Duwnn did." Gregory said.
Gretchen Hughes and Marcle
Price are the two other seniors
on the Duck roster and both
will play big roles in the Ore
gon starting lineup.
Hughes, who has been a back
row specialist in the past, will
be asked to move to the front
row as an outside hitter.
Price's career at Oregon has
been plagued with injuries, but
she will play a big role as a
middle blocker.
Joining tho throe seniors in
the starting lineup will likely
be Kalio Kerr. Stephanie War
ren and LaKeina Woods.
Kerr will replace Molly Mc
Grath at the settor position. As
c freshman last year, she per
formed well when McGrath
went down with an injury.
Gregory said Kerr's improve
ment at the position will be a
big help to the Ducks.
“Setter's a real pivotal posi
tion and Kalie has done a fine
job in the off-season on some
areas that noedod to be worked
on." he said. “She's one of the
most physical and quickest set
ters we've had."
Warren had a great year as a
true freshman earning a spot on
tho all-freshman team. Last
year, she ranked socond on the
team In kills and digs and
could be the Ducks' biggest of
fensive throat this season.
Woods will round out the
starting lineup at outside hitter.
Last year Woods struggled late
in the season, but Gregory
seemed pleased with hor per
formance in early practices.
